http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6UEtWnFFaZs this video shows roy had a good chin before he lost his weight for the first tarver fight. which in that fight roy was hit clean a number of times.
Nicely constructed. Of course, it leaves Lou Del Valle out, who short circuited Roy's legs with a single shot. I think the Del Valle punch was a sign that Roy was a little 'chinny', but as the vid clearly illustrates, he was by no means glass or soft jawed in his prime.
yes and it showed him talking bigshots from griffen i would have had him do most of that fight. and the ruiz fight. more of the straight right hands he was taking from hopkins in round 9 you could see roy never had chin problems. and when you think he was a junior middle weight. Lou Del Valle caught roy with a wonderful shot he got full exention on that punch and roy jones shook it off
It doesn't appear that Jones was looking at Del Valle, Tarver, or Johnson (having turned his head slightly in that Roys Jones manner) when he was sent to the canvas on each of those occasions - and we all know what is said about "the kind of punches that hurt you.." Also, each of those shots landed in different 'soft' areas of the head. Tarver on the chin, Del Valle on the temple, and Johnson on the back/side of the head.
It wasn't a slip else Roy Jones would have signalled to the referee and most importantly, the crowd, that it was one. He says "****" when he gets up. He was knocked down, and he knew it. He still dominated that fight though. Great fighter.
it was an off balance flash knockdown, ive never heard anyone report that he looked hurt in the Del Valle fight.
I think he was hurt. He looked unsteady on his legs even when he got up and did nothing but hold for the rest of the round. Roy himself after the fight admitted it was a good shot that took the legs from under him and dazed him.
It was a flash knock down, Roy got up and it wasn't like he was only wobbly legs or anything. Lou knocked down Virgil Hill as well, obviously John Ruiz and others hit much harder than Lou, he had no problems with those punches.
That's not true -- his legs were not unsteady -- he didn't hold really. The guy came at him and Roy was on the Ropes, moving his arms out of the way and it looked like he was trying to grab and hit him with a uppercut but the round was near ending. Roy himself said it was a flash KD. Roy fought better hitters than Lou before him and after. Personally speaking, Roy was in a bad position and got caught with a clean hard shot when he was standing to the side with his hands down. You can see his foot slip from underneath him. He was off balance, but it was a hard shot no doubt that buzzed him. But he was not on wobbly legs or anything of the sort.
There has never been a problem with Roy's chin. No matter how great one's defense, a fighter can't avoid getting hit. Also, Roy could have stayed at 168 but moved up to bigger and better things because it would have been ridiculous to end up 100-0 at SMW/MW. Anyone who moves up and gives up their advantages when they don't need to has more than a decent chin. OTOH, some fighters avoid talented and elite fighters for the majority of their career and somehow are attributed as having a great chin or great powers of recovery. LOL. Avoid the talented guys who can tap your chin and you'll look like you have an extraordinary chin too.
After the knockdown the announcers did mention that there seems to be a slippery part of the ring right around where Roy was knocked down at. That said, I think it was a legit knockdown, and I think Roy was buzzed for sure, evident by the way he wasn't quite himself for the rest of the round... I think it was still a 9-8 round though.
