Just read on another site that during the Jones Calzaghe fight one of Jones cornermen (Chirs Oneal ) called Jones Sr for advice . Sr was said to very upset for how un prepared theri corner was . He also says that he knwe something was wrong with his son just going to the ring and thinks Roy Jr may have peaked 2 weeks before the fight .
Did he beep them or called directly?Come on,like it made a difference,Calzaghe was whoppin him one way or the other.
Sr. made allot of great pts .Especially about his corner.. Also stated that no one pushes Jones anymore this is why he's been so flat lately ..Sr stated that Jones never fainted and was too square when he was up on the ropes ..I don't know what diffrence this makes but in the 3rd Tarver fight he looked to be in better shape then in ths Joe fight ..
Wow no kidding thanks for that MR. obvious :good atsch This thread was made to point out why you need a good corner nothing more ! I never stated that the outcome would of been diffrent !
thats why he didnt win he didnt want his father to take all the credit for his victory. i knew something was up when he didnt finish Calzaghe of in the first round, now i know why.
He didn't finish Joe in the first round because Joe wasn't that hurt and RJJ does not like to get hit. Father time caught up to Roy like it does all boxers if they stick around too long. Time to retire Roy, thanks for the memories.
I think this was no diffrent than the Tyson /Douglas corner the most recent the Khan corner ..Just to name a few if u can't stop the bleeding on cut why are u in a corner .Hell Zab Judah in the under card had 2 cuts and his corner controlled them ..Pitiful at such a high level ..
Debatable I'll admit, but when Calzaghe was down, that was possibly the most he's ever been hurt in his career; you could see it in his face, and in his legs - he was shook up. Prime Roy would have jumped on Joe and KO'd him then and there, no doubt about it. And in reference to Roy Sr., i think he does see A LOT of things in Roy Jr. that no one else see's. I know Alton Merkerson has been Roy's trainer for 16 years or so, but Roy Sr. has still been there, and still knows his son. He helped Roy Jr. (at times) in the third Tarver fight to dig out some good rounds, and show us the old Roy (round 5 especially was exceptional, considering Jones' condition at the time - sticking his chin out and all around taunting Tarver, after being knocked out twice). I'm not sure if Alton was there in the corner along with Roy Sr. for Tarver III, but it would be nice to see Alton and Roy Sr. work together one last time for Roy Jr.'s sake, and help him go out of boxing on a high with a win.
Its just amazes me that after being with the man for 16 yrs they still rely on calling dad .Only Sr would see these flaws that I wonder if Merkeson and team ever had the nerve to tell Roy about these flaws..
Seemed to me as if the corner was very unprepared. They weren't giving him any advice really, couldn't stop his cut from bleeding at all. & then on top of that they call his dad, his dad deserves some of that money. You need a corner, no matter who you are, you need a corner. Not having a good corner can cost you a fight & your career.
His corner definitely needs improvement. These are not the Super-Roy years anymore(as corny as it sounds)where he didn't need a cutman or so much guidance from his corner for confidence or win a close fight. He is gonna have to rely on the best corner possible when he needs it.
