Rubin Carter...

    He gets brought up here pretty sporadically... But I've always had an interest in him.

    Just how far could he have gone, in your opinion?

    I forget who I saw him fight. Think it was Mims... But god, Carter was huge. The back muscles he had were just... wow. Man was one of the most muscular boxers I've ever seen. Insane.

    Only man ever to KO Griffith too, so you'd imagine he had some sickening power.

    Only stopped once on a cut, despite having a dozen losses throughout his short career. Was he a durable guy?

    What did he have going for him exactly?

    Carter was indeed huge, and savage with it. I think My Dinner With Conteh might be the guy to ask but here's my two cents.

    He was strong as an ox but was outmuscled by Tiger. He basically outpshyched Griffin, I think he basically said that Griffin was a woman who wanted to be raped or some such terrible thing and Griffin went a bit nuts.

    No wonder.

    He could be outboxed I feel, but few would out muscles him and he was one of these guys who you just couldn't afford to play at his own game...or you'd lose.

    Guts, chin, machisomo...a less talented stronger Duran maybe? Good fighter, would have made a fortune today.

    Yeah, I can see him proudly wearing some paint on advertisment on his back for some casino and living it up now.

    And machismo indeed. Didn't Carter ****ing spar with Liston and get beaten up in doing so pretty badly? :)

    I read this story on ESB. Apparently he moved house because he knew with his attitude he would end up in with Listona again and could possibly be killed.

    My thoughts about him are that he was exciting, but he was no more than a journeyman at best.

    When Carter was on he was a viciouse fighting machine.
    Alot of speed and snap for a muscular guy.Good jab,awsome hook and rt. hand.
    His careere was spotty which he partially blamed on constantly being harassed by the police.
    I have his bouts with Benton,Griffith & Florez on DVD.He looks awsome in those fights.

    His career as a contender was basically over when he got sent to the clink.

    No shame in getting outmuscled by Tiger who was simply better.
    Also, slick boxers gave Rubin trouble; he often just basically shut down
    his attack on occasion when he knew he wasn't going to land the big one. His title fight with Giardello wasn't nearly as close as some want to believe; by the mid-rounds Joey seemed in complete charge of the fight. Also, Griffith did go wacko at the weighin and threw his fight plan out the window that night. Even Rubin said he knew he couldn't beat Emile if they got into a boxing match so he taunted him not to mention Emile gave up about 10 pounds in that fight moving up from welter. IMHO had they fought again, different story...

    Giardello was never in control of the Carter fight.

    He was second best on the inside throughout the whole bout and looked slow and faded

    Very close fight.

    Agreed,

    I actually thought Carter won that fight quite handily, scored it 10-5 for him on the rounds basis. And whoever it was that said Carter was a journeyman at best doesn`t know what they are talking about. You do not blow out fighters like Floro Fernandez and Emile Griffith in one round apiece, decision George Benton, Holly Mims, Jimmy Ellis and hang tough with the likes of Dick Tiger, Luis Rodriguez x2(who he knocked down in their first meeting) and Joey Giardello in losing efforts if your no more than a journeyman at best. Carter was a legitimate contender in the middleweight division for some time, until his inner demons and alcohol abuse ruined his career.

    Over half of his losses were to journeymen.
    He had 12 losses.
    3-4 to real good fighters.
    There are a lot of fighters who could punch like a mule but cant win big fights.

    I thought Carter won that fight. I think that fight ruined Carter's career.

    Well the Giardello family took the movie makers to court and won. The fight was not that close, and the decision was not booed in Phillidelphia.

    They took the makers to the court because they portrayed it as Carter being outright robbed...which he was not.

    As i said, it was a very close fight.One that could have gone either way.
