He was found guilty twice then had the verdict set aside, which is a hell of a lot different to being found not guilty

Everything I have read about the case suggest there was 'reasonable doubt' surrounding Carter's guilt.

The case was a black eye to the American Judiciary, that was so flawed that as you point out, a judge had to use a technicality to release an innocent man.

His release was based on procedural technicalities rather than innocence. The overwhelming evidence still points to him being guilty and a third trial was not proceeded with due to the prohibitive cost. And as in the OJ case the cops never spent another single day looking for any other suspects

He was just another murderer IMO. People got carried away with his alleged innocence as it made for a good story. Then Bob Dylan got in on the act with Hurricane (he stopped playing the song decades ago and refuses to discuss it). Then the watchable but seriously biased movie. I'm surprised Denzel Washington agreed to be part of such a farce

I never watched the film, but I know they had to change a couple things for the DVD release. But spinning a bias in a boxing career does not mean someone is guilty of murder beyond reasonable doubt. I would not want you on my jury if I was innocent of a crime that I was being tried for.

Procedural technicalities perhaps, but the system's failure to follow due process is troubling in its own right. If Carter was indeed the murderer, then New Jersey's inability to follow procedure created the circumstances that ultimately resulted in his release. If he wasn't guilty, then he was wrongfully incarcerated for a considerable portion of his life.

Either way, Carter did eventually appear to make peace with whatever demons raged inside of him, and did spend his later years advocating for those inmates who had been wrongly convicted. Not saying that gives him a pass for any previous crimes he might have committed, but it does mean that he wasn't The Beast Incarnate for the entirety of his life.

State murder cases are hard to get convicted of unless there are eyewitnesses and more than one. There may have been some added evidence by the cops but that was part of the game back then and juries could also be compromised easier, the Feds is a different game in the USA they have a 99.9 % conviction rate and hearsay is allowed. There are more people incarcerated in the USA than any country and there are more laws to get convicted off. I dont know if Carter was innocent or guilty but the time he served in the state was still a big bit

I agree with you 100% bollox. Anyone who thinks this ******* was a victim and and innocent has their head up their ass or hasnt done their homework on this case.

Guys, no one knows what happened. Many of my attorney friends do believe he was guilty as hell but who knows? One thing is that he seems to have stayed out of trouble all the years from his release to his death.

How much trouble could an old man with one eye who was about 5' 7" and weighed less than his 156 lb fighting weight living under the microscope get into? Other than beat the **** out of his wife and alienate several people involved in getting him free in addition to his hate speech laced public speaking engagements...

All I know is that nobody who is innocent tells lie upon lie upon lie upon lie upon lie about every detail that night including tampering with witnesses (both via trying to get them to lie and via intimidation). If you are innocent the truth is enough. Not only is there a mountain of evidence that points to Carter and Artis but there is zero evidence pointing to anyone else. Its sickening to see all of these people equate the man being freed on a technicality by a judge who wasnt even fully educated on the facts of the case with him being innocent. The fact is that he was a violent sociopath before the murders. He was a violent sociopath when the murders happened. He was a violent sociopath after the murders. And like most violent sociopaths he only slowed down when age and infirmity forced him to and even then he was still a woman beating race bater who predicted that his "tribe" (his words not mine) would rise up and slaughter white people (and for the record that wasnt the 1960s black panther era that he said that it was a few years ago). I wont shed any tears for him. He was overrated as a fighter and a total waste of the divine spark of life.

I've never heard any of this stuff before. Bob Dylan, Denzel Washington, Triple murders. WTF?!

I just thought he was an obscure middleweight from the 'sixties who knocked out Emile Griffith.
