Ruby Goldstein A Top Ref?

He reffed a lot of major fights.

 

He let Griffith kill Paret. Looked on as Emil let loose 20+ unanswered shots to a helpless and defenseless fighter. For that atrocity I would say he was a terrible ref.

 

Okay, you asked two questions.

1. Ruby Goldstein A Top Ref?
Yes, he was.

2. Anyone impressed with what they have seen/read of this third man?
I'm not impressed by referees generally. In the fact that I don't see any extraordinary skill or ability in the nature of the work.

But, having said that, to have refereed dozens of famous and world title fights is clearly an achievement.

That's A LOT of fights to check out before assessing his overall competence, imo.

He also let Floyd Patterson take an almighty beating off Johanssen. In the 3rd round Floyd was down I think 7 times. At one point Floyd got up didn't know where he was, walked away with his back to Ingo who proceeded to smash the unprotected Floyd with a huge right hand from the side.
I suppose things were a bit different then though.

 

He had a glass though.


Ive always kind of taken exception with those that say he was partly responsible for Paret's death. Paret was known as a guy who would take a lot of punishment without firing back and then suddenly open up when he thought he had the guy arm weary. Goldstein knew this and acted accordingly, not wanting to stop a fight when that was Paret's gameplan. It was also a different time in terms of allowing fighters to fight back from the brink so those two things combined to allow a tragedy to happen but I dont blame Goldstein.

 

Whoever allowed Fullmer fight to continue as long as it did was surely partly to blame. Or whoever agreed to the fight!

 

boxrec lists over 150 fights for him as referee, the majority are major fights or feature recognizable name fighters. I don't know if that's complete, or anywhere near.

I'd like to see more examples of his incompetence before I'd agree with labelling him such. I mean, that's a lot of fights, a lot of ROUNDS, featuring some very serious fighters.

 

Which Gavilan-Graham fight? The one we have footage of should not be controversial in the slightest.

 

Perhaps the one that was fixed.

But that would contradict mcvey's statement about Goldstein being "honest", so maybe not?
