Two big exciting punchers in their eras. Both having wins over guys that had seen better days. Cooney with Norton, lyle and Young.
Ruddock with Dokes and Bone crusher. And both came up short against the biggest names they fought, Cooney losing to Holmes, spinks and Foreman and Ruddock against Tyson, Lewis and Morrison. They were both built up as threats to the leading men of the day yet were found wanting. Who was the most overrated in terms of wins over faded names, then built up as top contenders? Whilst Razor never got a title shot he faced Tyson twice and was favourite over Lennox, Cooney lost to Holmes but then got another crack at the lineal champion spinks. Neither man made it further so who gets your vote?

Although Ruddock did beat a bunch of guys past there best he also managed to give a prime Tyson 2 good fights. In Cooneys big fights he didn't offer much.

Its ridiculous that Ruddock had 3 fights in 2015

Cooney, barely. Ruddock was overhyped as well. He poleaxed a faded Dokes, and because Dokes had given Holyfield a very tough fight, suddenly, Ruddock was hyped to be a contender for the title. He did show some mettle, though, it warring with Tyson, albeit a Tyson who was jaded by the Douglas beating.

Cooney was tremendously overhyped based on beating a couple of big names way past prime.

If managed properly, he could have done more in the long run. Instead, his managers went for the big payday against Holmes but wouldn't risk anything go get there and stunted Gerry's development and his confidence.

One thing to add, I think prime for prime Ruddock may ko Morrison. He was way past it when he fought Tommy.

I agree. I think Cooney could have been better had he had more of a development process.

If it had been the Ruddock of the Tyson fight s in there with morrison, then definitely. That version of Tyson was still deadly and Ruddock lasted nearly 19 rounds. He'd have stopped Tommy before the 5 th.

I hate to see guys like Ruddock still plugging away years after they should have retired. Only ends up predictably.

I know what you mean, Fergy. It's like Holyfield fighting well into the 2000s when he should have long retired for good.

As for Cooney and Ruddock, I think they were both somewhat overrated but that was mainly down to all the hype and the expectations that were placed on them, especially on Cooney. It is kind of sad in a way when some fighters fall way short of those expectations.

Both were very good, super heavyweights with tremendous power. Too bad we didn't get to see them against their peers. Cooney-Weaver and Cooney-Coetzee would've been tremendous. Ruddock-Morrison '91 and Ruddock-Holyfield are both barnburners. Ruddock destroys Morrison in his prime. By the time he faced The Duke, Ruddock fought only once in 3 years since his bout with Lennox. He was faded big time.

Cooney was better. He only lost 3 times all 3 times to a hall of fame fighter.
Plus he gave Holmes a damn good fight.
At his best I say Cooney was better

Its a close one for me. Cooney gives Holmes a hard fight, Ruddock gave Tyson two hard battles. Cooney gets smashed by spinks and Ruddock by Lewis. They were both built up as scary killers because of scary wins over faded names. It's funny but shavers was probably ko ing guys a lot more than either man but he never got the build up that they got.
