I know looks can be deceiving, but have you ever been curious how some fighters may have tough, even brutish facial features, yet weak chins? These types are usually hard punchers too. McGovern and Olivares are the first to come to mind.

There’s a blast from the past. Never forget the first Bowe fight. What was going on in his head. Winning a fight then fouling all the way to disqualification. Then one of the biggest crowd riots I have seen. Madness.

Two thoughts on "rugged looking fighters."

I heard an interview with SRL, his interviewer said that one of the questions to be answered was whether SRL could take a hard punch. SRL answered, "I hope we never find out."

A heavyweight who fought in the 50s-60s told me that in those days he often didn't see his opponent until the weigh in. He said that he always hoped his opponent would be "tough looking", lots of scars and a nose all over his face. He said that told him that the guy had been getting hit and he should be able to hit the guy too. He said that it worried him if his opponent was unmarked, and did not look like a fighter. That told him that the guy might be hard to hit.

Being "rugged looking" might just mean that the guy is taking a lot of punishment and may not have good defense. His "chin" might be as good as most, but if his defense is lacking and a fighter gets hit enough, he'll probably have a "suspect chin."
