Yeah, and this is just the latest in LONG line of undeserved title shots. Ruiz is exhibit A for boxing corruption. A fighter of limited ability who got where he was because of his connections to powerful promoters - which enabled him to get away with his illegal holding too. Oh, notice how he overacted to get extra "rabbit punch" calls after the first round? That's typical Ruiz too, try to ham it up to get point deductions or DQs. Usually he fakes low blows. I guess Haye didn't hit him close enough to the beltline for him to pull that one, so he changed up his game a bit!
I don't know about connections but I think he was handpicked because of his low risk-high visibility factor. He did give Holyfield all he could handle, and has 2 world championship belts. For today's heavyweights, he's a useful steppingstone.
If by "old style" you mean the illegal excessive holding he used, then yeah. Ruiz without the cheating isn't competitive at the world class level, as tonight showed yet again.
The booing as he did his ring-walk pissed me off (as it always does). I know from reading other posts here that genuine boxing fans go to fights in the UK, but booing a man who's about to risk his life for people's entertainment really grips my ****; save that crap for football/soccer matches. Anyway, Ruiz showed a lot of heart tonight to the point of defying his age. I'm glad didn't stoop to the usual trash-talking for Ruiz, he comes across as a real gent outside the ring.
Same here. That's part of why I always rather watch fights at home than go to them. People are assholes when they get into crowds...and are drunk. Which they often are. If I wanted to be around a bunch of drunken assholes, I'd actually show up at our family reunions.
:good He had my respect for being a boxer, but I was no-where near being a fan and like you, I anticipated a typical John Ruiz "Hugfest"!! What we got was the total opposite and while it took him 10 years plus for me to dislike him (Based entirely on his boxing style and in-fight shenanigans), it took under 27 minutes for me to reverse that opinion. He did try to "Come it" a few times, but hey we can't expect a complete transformation can we? :rofl I wonder if we are related?
Is Ruiz earning my respect...:think Respect is earn't good and proper...:happy I thought that John Ruiz gave a durable performance and absorbed shots that would have flattened all the Heavyweight Division right now, including both the Klits...:yep I always had Ruiz down as a bit of a hugger, last night he came to fight and never took a backward step even after taking solid punishing shots time after time...:yep He could have took his payday very honurably by the 5th round at the least but stayed in there until his corner called time...:yep Maximum respect John Ruiz...:happy :happy :happy
ruiz deserves a hell of a lot of credit for stickin in there and makin the fight entertaining, but i saw nothing from haye tonight that makes me think he can beat either klitschko
It was like Balboa vs Drago, after a few rounds I wanted to root for Ruiz, he really won me over in that fight.
