BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (July 3, 2008) – The World Boxing Association ruled today at its Directory Meeting that WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev will be considered “champion in recess” due to an injury and that he has until June 26, 2009 to fight for the title.

Negotiations have started between representatives of the WBA’s top two rated heavyweights, ex-WBA champion Nikolai Valuev and former two-time WBA title-holder John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs), respectively, to fight for the WBA “regular” heavyweight championship belt. The Valuev-Ruiz will be obliged to fight Chagaev by June 26, 2009.

“We’re happy to get an opportunity to fight for the WBA title again,” Ruiz said from Argentina.

The Puerto Rican-American Ruiz, living in Las Vegas, is the first and only Latino heavyweight champion of the world. He has fought in 10 world championship fights, defeating three world heavyweight champions -- Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – in addition to beating top contenders such as Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Kirk Johnson and Jameel McCline during his 15-year pro career.

I think that we all knew that this day would come.

Ruiz, and not Ahunanya should be called "Friday the 13th" because nothing this evil ever dies.

This is fair, because of his ranking, but his ranking is not necessarily justified.

Let´s just hope Valuev really does a number on him. Noboby wants to see huggy as champion again.

I know fans don't want to see Ruiz as champion, but come on. Valuev, a 7 foot giant as a two time champion. Now he can make some money going to the WWE. He needs to talk to PBF's people.

I remember a a couple years back a boxing magazine said Ruiz is like Jason from "Friday the 13th", the man will never just die off, he will always come back for another victim.

I hope Valuev wins and does it in impressive fashion, Vauev can be a big draw, Ruiz never was.

I think Valuev will beat him more convincingly, this time, though.

Until somebody does exactly this, a Tua, on Jawny he'll never go the **** away. I think he even said it himself, unless he was KO'ed he wouldn't ever think of retiring. :nut

Ruiz is the HERPES of boxing. The disease that just wont go away no matter how many times you get rid of it:-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

It's scary to think that even if W.Klitschko hammered him mercilessly and took him out in under 5 rounds, we'd still have this plague in the sport years after.

    terribly, terribly SAD!!!!!!!!!1

i am very pleased the wba stripped chagaev. it was the right thing to do....Chagaev is lucky he gets a mandatory shot at the winner. hopefully, he will retire though and clear the way for a wlad-wba winner fight

as for ruiz-valuev 2, either man can win. valuev is not as good as some think. he jabbed the hell out of a shot opponent in liakohvich who stood right in front of him. Ruiz will get in to his cheast and make it an ugly fight and one hard to score. valuev has decent skills for his size but very slow hands and little power. his greatest attributes are his size and stamina.

depends where the fight is. in germany, valuev wins but if it's in the us, ruiz can pull it off. many thought larry donald and ruiz outpointed him...this guy is no ali
