I will never forgive Invisible Al for treating a fighter that way, much less a world champion like Vazquez.

Robles is a good trainer. After such a classy interview, I’m sure karma will treat him well and he’ll reach the top of the ladder with another fighter soon.

    Which it is.

Ruiz mentally checked out after getting all the belts and millions of dollars.

You can lead the horse to water but you can't make him drink.

This is on Fat T1TS alone.

I actually think he beats Joshua 9 out of 10 times, good chin, strong, fast combo puncher and will punch in the pocket and has big balls, THAT'S if he was committed, but as much as he made Mexico love him with that win and all his fans, he lost them a bit with the return, he was plain embarrassing

Then why pay a trainer a million and a half dollars if the trainer has nothing to do with it?

The trainer didn't even lead a horse to water in this instance.

He waited for Ruiz to show up to his (the trainer's) gym.

This was a case of a trainer who isn't ready for the big time. It's why great champions (and great teams) set up camp in the mountains or the country so they won't be distracted and why they have all their meals prepared by their own cooks. And why sparring partners are brought to them. And why everything in the weeks leading up to a title defense are about them.

It's not a trainer in California with a gym full of guys who aren't going to amount to anything sitting there waiting for a guy with a weight problem to show up. And if he never does, the trainer still has his hand out waiting for his cut of the purse.

If a trainer isn't responsible for a fighter entering the ring at 300 miserable pounds, then what is the trainer responsible for?

You're just making excuses for Andy Ruiz. As though it was Robles' excuse for Ruiz stuffing himself to 300lbs.

Ruiz is a grown man. Your trainer is not your baby sitter.

He needed a new trainer he came in fat and out of shape in the rematch. His trainer was probably partying with Ruiz FFS instead of training him.

The second he showed up a stone heavier my confidence in him dissipated. If you're not dedicated you're going to lose plain and simple, the game is merciless that way.

I'm not making excuses for Andy Ruiz. I never thought much of Andy Ruiz. I thought Ruiz lost to Sergie Liakhovich.

People in this thread are making excuses for his trainer. The trainer's job is to prepare the fighter for the fight.

Was Andy Ruiz prepared? No. Was he in shape? No. Did the trainer do anything about it? No. Did the trainer earn his million-plus dollars? No.

    That's why he was fired.

I totally agree with the move. Ruiz was the worst conditioned and worst prepared heavyweight I've seen in a title fight FOREVER. And that's the job of the trainer. To condition and prepare the fighter.

So exactly what was the trainer suppose to do if he wouldn't show up for workout? Was he suppose to beat Ruiz? Give him time out? take away his toy?

There was no trainer in the world that could have made Ruiz do anything he himself didn't want to do. This is all on Ruiz. Blame the trainer if he showed up in shape but looked like a deer in a headlight with no game plan in the fight. This isn't what happened though. Ruiz himself said he was gassed and out of shape. He couldn't execute any game plan.

    Are you serious?

Do you think Andy Ruiz is the first champion who didn't like to train?

    What do you do?

You set up a training camp where the team goes to live. You control who leaves and who enters. You control the meal plans. You schedule training sessions. You know where he is at all times. You get the guy out of bed. You get him to run. How much running did Andy Ruiz do during this camp? How many miles? How many miles did the trainer determine he should run? Where is their training schedule? Let's see it.

And if Ruiz gets pissed, there's nowhere to go. No other food to eat. Nothing else to do but follow the schedule. And if he's angry, tell him to yell at you. But your reputation is on the line just like his. And if he doesn't like it, tell him to take it out on the sparring partners. Or take it out on JOSHUA.

It's been going on for hundreds of years, for God's sake. See every successful heavyweight champion for the last century. They've had a professional training camp.

What you don't do ... when you're being paid a million dollars to train a champ to defend his title ... is stay at YOUR gym so you can charge people who want to train there a couple bucks. And when Ruiz doesn't show up, you call others and ASK THEM where he might be. And go, well, nobody knows where he is. This has happened before. He doesn't like to train. So I'll just stay here and maybe he'll show. And then I'll hop on a plane when the fight date approaches so I can get my check and shrug my shoulders and say I didn't know where he was.

This isn't Andy Ruiz fighting Devon Vargas for a couple thousand dollars on a Stub Hub undercard in front of a couple hundred people. And maybe he'll swing by the gym for an hour or two a day for a two weeks, and you'll see him at the arena.

It's the goddamn BIG TIME. Tens of Millions. Main Event. World Titles.

And you're sitting around your gym waiting for him to bother to show up?

Does the guy want to be a BIG TIME TRAINER? Then set up a big time training camp and take charge.

That's what you do. This isn't a new idea. It's standard practice.

When you don't, a guy shows up weighing 300 pounds and embarrasses himself. And YOU get fired. Because it was YOUR job to get him prepared. That's why they're paying you a million dollars.

Emanuel Steward once brought in Jeremy Williams to spar with Lennox Lewis. Steward wanted to light a fire under Lewis. So he told him Williams was talking garbage about him. And he had Williams, who knew martial arts, throw Lewis to the floor during a sparring session. And then he threw him down to the floor a second time. And Steward just grinned. And Lewis got pissed.

Think Steward sat around Kronk gym waiting for Lennox Lewis and Wlad Klitschko to decide if they wanted to show up and work out that day? And if they didn't want to work out, think he said, awesome, call me when you do? I'll be here, at my home gym, waiting for you to fly in.

Hell no, he set up camps and worked with them. And he was a lot more established as a trainer than Robles Jr. is.

And even if everyone was in camp, and Steward didn't like the way the fighter was performing, he'd shake things up. Like he did with Williams.

    What did Robles do?

    Are you joking?

Ruiz CLEARLY has issues with self control when it comes to food.

Why should his BOXING COACH, not nutritionist, BOXING COACH, have to baby Ruiz 24/7 so he doesn't eat rubbish?

It's on Ruiz, end of. He came in out of shape because the money went to his head.

I know you picked a cool name and all, but you clearly know jack squat about boxing and heavyweight championship training camps.

Why should his trainer do those things? WHY?

Because, when you don't, and your fighter shows up weighing 300 pounds and loses his title in his first defense, you get fired.

Just like Robles did ... yesterday.

That's EXHIBIT A when someone asks why a trainer should do those things.

Did you seriously just ask why a top trainer being paid millions should do that on a BOXING BOARD? Christ. (LOL) Did you forget what happened to Robles already? We're literally posting in a thread about him being fired.

Because it's not Al Haymon's job to train him. It's not his manager's job to train him. It's not the accountant's job. It wasn't Eddie Hearn, the promoter's job, to train him. It wasn't the financial backers in Saudi's job to train him. It wasn't the President of Mexico's job to train him. It wasn't the cook at the fast food Taco restaurant's job to train him.

IT WAS THE TRAINER'S JOB. The guy they were paying a million dollars to so Ruiz would be prepared to successfully defend his title.

That guy. It was his job. They paid him a million dollars ... and he did nothing. So they fired him.
