    Does anyone in other countries who are of American decent identify as American-______? Is this a uniquely American thing? Are black folks in England called African English? Do mike Perez’s Irish born kids refer to themselves as Cuban Irish?

    Well you cut out when it said born in California, then going back to California. The only connection I've read of him with Mexicali Mexico is that his grand father owns a gym there and he would go there to train for his amateur bouts. Lots of boxers from other countries would relocate to Mexico specifically for boxing training, Tomoki Kameda being a good example. So you're really grasping at straws, his whole identity, swag and demeanor comes from Imperial County California, just like Danny Garcia and Philly... the man even still lives in Imperial Cali for goodness sakes. How more American can you be?

    Yeah, Ruiz competing for Mexico in the Olympics, calling himself the Mexican champion, waving the Mexican flag, and being raised in Mexico, is truly the epitome of the American identity. How much more American could he be.

    And as I said he was raised in Mexico, that obviously does not exclude going back to California. And indeed that's what the article explicitly states -- That was he was raised in Mexico.

    Ruiz even went to school in the United States, so I'm not sure how much he was supposedly raised in Mexico. Again, the only connection I could find of him and Mexi Cali is of his granddad owning a gym there. You're still desperately grasping at straws repeating the same thing over and over again. He waved the Mexican and American flag during his fight with Joshua, claims he represents all the people in Imperial California and still lives and raises his 4 kids there.

    I don't think you understand that Mexicans and Mexican Americans are different. Obviously Ruiz is going to claim he's the Mexican champ, he's the first person of Mexican descent to become the HW champion of the world, they all compete mostly at the lower weight divisions. But he's as American as Oscar De la Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Johnny Tapia and Michael Carbajal, all great Mexican American champs.

    None of that means jack ****. He represents Mexico. Btw, the #1 ranked Womens Tennis player is half Japanese half American, but represents Japan. You gonna go and dig up her history and say she's not Japanese either? WTF does it matter?

    Lil history on Osaka, the USTA passed on inviting her to train at the US Academy. She thinks its because of her race. Thus she reps Japan since the start. The US lost out on the future #1 tennis player in the world cuz of stupid race ****.

    Re: the douchebaggery OP, lmao. The individual identifies their nationality, its their freedom. No pompous douchebag on a boxing forum can change that.

    Serious question, and don't just do your typical stuff : really answer this. How about Americans who do not have Mexican heritage. They see Andy Ruiz become Champion. Shouldn't all Americans be able to support and identify with Ruiz as their Champion. You know in the U.K. how All British people support and consider Joshua one of their own right. But with Ruiz it's like he's not really proud of being an American, only of Mexico. Why is only one side of this seen, the Mexican perspective. How about all the other Americans who aren't Mexican who see a guy named Andy Ruiz win the HW Champ of the World from their own freakin Country! Many Americans have been waiting all their life for Unified HW Champ, now they finally get one and you can't even be proud that he's American because you're being told he's Mexican. It's silly, all Americans regardless of whether you are Mexican are not should be able to support Andy as your fellow countryman.

    if he wanted to be american, he could and would say he was, but he is the first mexican heavyweight champ, maybe because of your inbred president, that might have something to do with where he calls home

    Primitive old world nationality doesn't threaten or override the American identity, it makes no sense to British or French nationalist peasants as their identity is based of nationalism created by the legendary American general Patton, who prevented the Germans from deleting West European petty nationalism out of the map

    Adding American to anything (means superior)

    German = Normal German
    German American = Better German

    Mexican = Normal Mexican
    Mexican American = Better Mexican

    African = Normal African
    African American = Better African

    Asian = Normal Asian
    Asian American = Better Asian
