By turning his back on the referee and holding onto the ropes he was begging to be stopped. He quit. Totally quit and the world (and the ref) saw it
Am I alone in thinking it doesn't matter if he quit or not. He was badly beaten with no hope of winning. If he continued it may've taken a bad effect on his health. He was beaten and all 3 in the ring knew it.
Both body and mind said he didnt want any more. Yes meant no. If he wanted to continue mentally, he would have attempted to walk forward and do his utmost to convince the ref that he was ok to continue. He obviously wasn't going to say no mas out loud. Joshua had already decided he wanted out, the moment he spat his gum shield out and refused to answer to command to walk forward. Mike Griffin showed him the door which lead to the way out, after which a relieved Joshua responded with a smile. Those are not the actions of someone who in any shape or form had any intention to fight on.
If the referee had obliged a badly hurt Joshua and let him continue, Big Andy would've sparked him out anyway. All academic, really.
If he really did want continue, he would've made a fuss when the referee stopped it, instead of grinning like an idiot and looking as relieved as a man who escaped the gallows.
Yes, that is why asked if he wanted to continue, he answered: "yes". And then was shocked when it got stopped.
It's called saving face. Charles Martin ''looked'' shocked and actually summoned the will to protest, when the ref waved it off after he got up at 9, yet no one in their right mind would argue that he wanted to continue
When did he refuse to walk forward? The ref didn't ask him to. Whatever the ref motioned at him, Joshua didn't notice it. Because he was out of it. People are ignoring that he was badly hurt. Thats why he was slow to respond. Look at his face. And his mouthguard seemed to be an issue from the get go. It was barely in his mouth the opening bell. And during one point the ref told him to put it in(think it was after a KD). People want to brand Joshua as a quitter. But he gave it his best shot and was unable to continue. I guess everyone sees what they want to see.
You act like he hadn’t had to walk forward three separate times already. He had plenty of practice. He was tired and frustrated because his punches had zero effect of Andy by that point in the fight.
Yes, he had to walk when the ref told him to. After the last KD, the ref didn't ask him to. He asked if he wanted to continue. And it was clear that Joshua was badly hurt. So the ref stopped the fight.
