After the weigh in I think there’s way more likelihood that Ruiz hasn’t trained properly for this than he’s intentionally chosen to come in so heavy. I just don’t buy that a guy who was so successful last time would make such significant changes. What would be the point? From a tactical perspective more than anything. You say adding the weight can make him punch harder. Does he need to punch harder? Joshua was down twice inside three rounds and stopped?

Joshua builds a cautious lead in the earlier stages and stops him halfway through the fight. A desperate Ruiz who was keen to prolong his career isn’t coming in this fat. He won the lottery in June and this is the reward.

    Gobsmacking weight gain.

Simple things add up. Ruiz at a stone heavier will be a bit slower. AJ at 2 stones lighter will be a bit quicker. The bigger ring makes it harder for a slower Ruiz and easier for a quicker AJ.

A lot of people making Ruiz out to be a puncher like Wilder but with a knockout/stoppage ratio of 64% its respectable not murderous. On paper, AJ has fought and beat bigger punchers in fighters like Klitschko, Parker, Whyte, Takam and Povetkin.

I do believe the left hook that scrambled Joshua’s equilibrium at MSG was a bit of a freak punch in terms of where it landed and that he took and survived far heavier shots from Whyte and Klitschko. Having watched this week unfold I’m now leaning slightly towards an AJ win.

It's obviously on purpose the massive weight gain.

You don't do things by accident in your first title defence with so much on the line.

It's a game plan, they knew AJ would come in lighter and thus be trying to move about more and box.

When Joshua is at his best he is the bigger stronger guy, they are trying to exploit a weakness...

The huge weight gain is an attempt to mentally get an edge as well as allow ruiz to boss centre ring and push him back. They know Joshua doesn't fight well on the back foot, that's exactly what the plan will be, keep Joshua going backwards, lean on him, push him, force him back and go to the body.

They will hope AJ is carrying less power and will try to walk straight through him.

I see this going one of two ways, ruiz hunts him down and knocks him out with hooks or AJ catches him coming in with a straight right..

Either way it's not going the distance unless AJ has a plan to simply survive the first 7 or 8 rounds and hope ruiz gasses late with the extra weight.

Ruiz did not remove his hat or clothes, is it possible he faked the weigh in?

Good post. Seen an interview with AJ after the weigh in and AJ looked a bit perplexed about the weight. If nothing else it's got him thinking. I'll fed the clip now.

I half thought it and joked on it but there is a point where he dips his head and then it's obvious there is no weight in the hat. Maybe he is wearing lead underpants?

Strong possibility. He doesn't look any heavier. You'd assume he would.

    Ah, I know why!

Loads and loads of food has been going into his mouth, to his belly and spreading to the rest of his body.
