Funny how much some fairly simple rule changes could completely alter boxing results. Was Ward Kovalev a robbery? Under actual boxing rules I'd say no. Kovalev would win on most scorecards but it would be legitimate to have Ward as winner. But personally, I always felt kd's get undervalued on the scorecards. I think if you get the only kd in a close fight, you should almost always win. The way to make that happen would be to award two extra points per kd round instead of one. I've always thought a single kd round should be 10/7 and multiple 10/6. Kovalev would have drawn under the judges scorecards in that scenario.
Another rule change worth considering would be making all injuries go to the scorecards and be td's rather than just some. That would also have altered some significant clashes
Fair enough. It's a taste thing, definitely. What do people value more in a fight? It varies per person ( which is why so many scorecards are different in the first place).
I can see your point, and I agree that knockdowns should be decisive factors in close fights, but 10-8 rounds are just fine in my opinion. It would be absurd if a fighter dominated his opponent the entire round, then suffered a flash knockdown and was suddenly behind 3 rounds.
Yeah, but the change wouldn't conflict with your last point, though. Id score that round a 10/8 round under different rules, since I'd score a round like that under current rules 10/9
The way it is, is fine. 10-7 for a knockdown is too much. It would be hard for a comeback fighter to make it on top.
problem with that is in short fights eg 4 rounders or 6 rounders, someone could get one soft flash knockdown, get the face boxed off them for the whole fight and still win
This is the best point I've seen against it. Still, if someone was that dominant, even in a four round fight they'd win 38/37 by winning other rounds and lowering the kd round by 1 through dominance (8/10, 10/9,10/9,10/9)
10 - 8 rounds are fine. Have a flash knockdown or having a slip ruled incorrectly would ruin even more fights. Let's think about what really would have made the difference last night. You should not be allowed to constantly wrestle your opponent. Clinching needs to be punished more effectively. It robs fans of an experience of a good fight. Give fighters a "no clinch bonus" or sportsman ship bonus. If the fight gets completed and you haven't committed anything outside the rules you get extra money.
If a fighter tells the ref what to do, it should be warned and then deducted a point. Mayweather, Ortiz, Ward all annoy the hell out of me when they argue with the referee. Very rarely are fighters warned for backchat to the referee. I know rules already exist around this, & I was always told when growing up to respect referees. It seems the arrogance of some fighters gets in the way during big fights.
How about having 12 judges each scoring 1 round each. letting a judge judging only 1 round will take some of the emotions out of the balancing the score card.
