I seriously think he is under rated, and would have beaten Ibragimov. Has strong amateur pedigree, strong chin, big puncher, mobile, south poor, fast for a h/w, very fit. I think he would beat Peter, and is a tougher fight for Haye than Wlad.
Chagaev has a great deal of ability, but it is apparent that he is another VitKlit who maybe left his best in the amatuers. He needs to vacate the belt, get healthy, and start over.
The guy can't really help the injuries and illnesses that have beset him lately. I think he has a great deal of skill and ability. The giant Valuev may not be a great fighter, but he sure has no problems beating anyone who's not named Chagaev, does he? I agree, he ought to not imperil his standing, or his record and vacate the title for a while and get himself healthy.
I think he is distinctly average but is better than Ruiz but that isn't saying much. Hes holding up the unification process so should vacate if he cant get healthy.
You are right, he would beat Haye and Peter, but i am sure he would loose to Ibragimov. Ibragimov is really underrated.
Why the hell would get rid of the belt. he would not get given a title shot for ages. the belts is what fees his family.
Chagaev is probably the best "boxer" in the HW division. He has very good defensive skills, and a wide variety of punches to call upon. However, he is not so good in other areas, in comparison to other HW's (speed, power, workrate etc.). He might well be as high as second in the division, but is still a long way behind Vlad.
No he isn't underrated i think he is a little overrated In my opinion he lost vs Valuev and Virches and the Ruiz fight could have been a draw. I think Valuev will take the titel from him in the rematch
Chagaev is very good, was a great amateur, but for be it looks like he was at his best in destroying Calloway 2,5 years ago. His best moment was the clear Valuev win (116-112 on my card) but he didn't look THAT good there. Whether it was because of the size difference was a good question, however he looked ever worse vs. Skelton... Slowed down a bit, conditioning was never his best weapon, power is not really there anymore... interesting and sad.
Chagaev is a very good fighter, very underrated: Good power, skills, stamina, defence and a great chin. Such a shame he keeps getting injured, because the unification match ups were just around the corner and then we could have seen exactly how good he is. Personally I think he would pose any heavyweight problems, including Wlad, but like Ibragimov,(another underrated fighter) he's a small heavy, who probably should have been fighting as a cruiser.
Because they are going to strip him anyway, and he is just creting ill will. There are many fans out there now who will not pay to see him.
