It would be good to factor in somehow, the ratio of fights made away from the fighter's hometown as this would help minimise the inflated rankings of people like Bute, who made it to number 5 off the back of a protected career but wouldn't make my top 20. That would ham Ward too, so no approach is pitch-perfect because he makes my top three regardless of his unwillingness to travel...

That would harm every American based boxer in history, and also boxers from the old timer eras because travelling was much harder back then.

Yeah, I know it probably wouldn't work out fairly. I was just trying to think of why Bute was so highly ranked compared to where I would place him. So far, he's been the biggest anomaly generated by Rummy's system. His career was built round hand-picked opponents and fighting in Montreal. As soon as he stepped up in class and traveled he got dismantled...

Don't think that's completely true. He had a history of fighting opponents that the other SMW's got praised for, and in most cases in (much) more impressive fashion. Just a couple of names; Miranda, Bika, Johnson, Mendy...
Bute was a bit of a frontrunner, but his list of opponents wasn't that bad and none of them were home town decisions too, like other "stay at home" fighters.

He just choked when fighting the best opponents on their turf. But that happened to other big names as well.

Just outside of the top10 for sure. 13, maybe 14. :D
But, a lot of people come down on him way too hard and act like he was just some paper beltholder that only fought stiffs in his backyard, while his resume is actually pretty good for a modern day former beltholder. And like I said, he dominated most of them unlike other big(ger) names from the same era.
Even the Andrade I fight suituation was never really judged fairly by most (the referee wasn't the only guy guilty of that) in my opinion. What should a fair referee have done? Stopped the fight when it was already over according to the IBF rules in effect?
Of course he's not top5, but you can make a case for him being low top10 though.

Maybe I judge him too harshly from the Froch fight. I guess that was Froch's career-best performance (note, in Nottingham) fueled by an almost maniacal and focused desperation with his career on the line. But all said and done, when Bute stepped up he fell a long way short of being competitive, although no-one can question his heart from that fight.
