I'm not buying that Mercer threw that fight at all. I had an argument a couple of months ago with someone that was discrediting Spinks win over Holmes because in his opinion Holmes was shot. Sure he was in decline but rewatch this fights with Mercer, Holyfield and McCall and you will see a still dangerous pro's pro a truly all time great heavyweight that is easily top five.

Why would Mercer cost himself a title shot he was one of hottest fighters in the division at that point. Holyfield vs Mercer would have sold a lot more than Holyfield vs Holmes did.

Correct. Mercer could be very under focused.. He lost to Jessie Ferguson and basically tired to bribe in the center of the ring to lay down.

Yes--it happened, and there is video and audio.

" Mercer repeatedly offered Ferguson a 100,000 dollar bribe to go down both before and during the bout which Ferguson refused according to his testimony under oath in court. This bout led to charges of sports bribery being filed against Ray Mercer by the Manhattan District Attorney's office "

By losing this fight, Mercer blew a promised title shot against Riddick Bowe and a guaranteed 1.5 million dollar payday.

The lost to Holmes was legit. Mercer could not deal with Larry's jab and Ring IQ, and wasn't willing to pay the price to take two to give one on that night.

The funniest line in the article is implying Mercer nearly KO'd Larry in the 1st round with a jab. I don't even think Sonny Liston could have done that if Larry had his eyes closed. Whoever wrote this clearly doesn't like Larry.

Larry was far too skilled for the crude mercer.

Spinks win over Lar in 1985 was a v big deal...so was his hammering of cooney...its as much a shame a pretty decent spinks is devalued totally by 91 seconds...that holmes in the 90s is devalued...he had mccall beat...than we woulda seen holmes v tyson 2...or holmes v bruno...both good fights

About as believable as the tin foil hat wearers who say that Foreman-Moorer was a fix too.

I heard he took a payoff also but Mercer also came in out of shape a few times and had nothing like against Jesse Ferguson - Mercer had a good chin and that got him past Morrison's bombs and right to Tommy's middleweight chin with a combo- When King was running Holmes he paid for rating of Holmes opponents so Larry looked like he beat a contender- Nat Loubet's son in law John Ort got pinched for fixing the ratings and I heard about payoffs with others to not train - I heard Moore did it vs Patterson and Jersey Joe dropped a few also many middles at the time dropped one for a payday - The odds I believe favored Holmes so must have been a payday and a bet
