The quicker someone gets rid of the joke Berto the better, Berto is as bad a champion, probably worse, than Ricky Hatton.
For the sake of argument, what if Williams ends up getting the fight against Mosley and wins, who would you then view as the "WW king"?
It's not Berto's fault that the WBC ranked Micky Rodriguez #2 and thus their fight was for the vacated title. It's true that he's not an elite titlist however it more less attributed to inexperience and not a lack of skill.
Let's say for some odd reason... Berto wins where would he go from there? hope cotto beats pacman and do that?
Mosley can win this fight with Berto with not too much trouble. Mosley should have tried to make the Pacman fight no matter what. Now is the time to put a exclamation on his career which a good win over Pac would have done, and fighting Berto will not do it.
My guess is that since SSM has already had 7 fights @154 and PW has been fighting at 154 or 160 in his last 3, if they fight it will probably be at JMM, which would leave WW rather open. I guess it would be between PBF (providing he convincingly beats JMM) and the Pac-Cotto winner (providing that fight comes off).
To me, he already done that with the Margo fight, I think Berto would still be a good win for him regardless at this stage of his career. Pacquiao, depending on the nature of the win, might not be seen as so great as you might expect. As soon as one of these WWs beat him, it will be disregarded as Pac not being able to go on beating these "big" guys. Pacquiao is in a win win situation right now, on-one would have held it against him if he had lost to ODLH or Hatton, same will go for Cotto, SSM and FMJ, should any of those fights go ahead. Beating Berto means unification and beating a young prospect ... always good.
At one point or another he has take to take a step up, and in a welterweight division with Paul Williams, Margarito, Mayweather, Cotto, Shane Mosley, Clottey, etc. I think stylistically, Mosley isn't a bad test. Its a winnable one for Berto in my opinion. I think he could out hustle Mosley in this one, at this point in his career he is faster than Mosley and has better stamina, that could present problems for Mosley. I don't think Mosley is the crafty type to present problems for Berto, and I think Berto has the fighter's instinct and heart to not panic in there. Yes, he may have his shaky moments in there and be taken into deep waters, like any young boxer, but thats how you learn and become better.
Not ideal but it makes sense. Shane needs to keep fighting and this is certainly preferable to a Cintron fight.
