Run before breakfast?

I'm trying to lose weight (I'm 5'7 @ 170 lbs right now). I read years ago on a fitness forum that it was best to do cardio early in the morning as soon as waking up and then chunk down a huge breakfast to get the metabolism going.

Good or bad, yay or nay?

I'd suggest eating something small beforehand to get the sugar levels up. A banana and a glass of water maybe; if you run on an empty stomach, you're likely to trigger a metabolic freeze from what I understand and you simply won't be able to go as strong/long. Something small and a good nutritious breakfast afterward seems best.

It's good for a model attempting to attain a low bodyfat for a photoshoot but for an athlete that needs to perfom at a highly physical level, no.

Not really a good idea if you plan on doing any quality training that day.
Your liver glycogen stores are already depleted after sleeping so don't expect to get fitter doing that.
If you're serious about losing weight just focus on your diet, calories in versus calories out. Making breakfast your biggest meal of the day is a good idea, increase your metabolism by doing resistance training, eat regular small meals to keep your blood sugar levels stable, drink plenty of water and don't eat before you sleep are all good general ideas for losing weight.
