Currently I'm trying to run for distance, but soon I'm going to start timing myself some days. For the people in better shape than me: For a 1/2 mile run, would you be able to go flat out and sprint, or if you have say a 7 minute mile would you do 1/2 mile in 2-3 minutes? I'm just trying to get a goal to shoot for when I start trying to improve speed. Right now my mile is hovering around 10 minutes, but when I get in shape it's consistent. I do 1 mile in 10 minutes or 10 miles, 10 minutes each. So I think when I get back to that point I need a speed and form day to improve any farther.
If you're doing a half mile you want to start with a strong stride, about a 75% run, then cruise until the last 200. then go balls out.
I don't think anyone here can flat out sprint for 800 meters. I've never trained for that distance so I have no idea how much I'd have to pace myself but a sprint I don't think so.
No idea about 1/2 a mile. The least distance i run is 3 so not sure. Time wise i ran 10.10 yesterday at approx 8 mins a mile ( rough calculation based on time and distance) .
One of my favrote track events. Too far for the body to sprint all out too short to pace one's self, the 800 or 1/2 mile is run at a faster pace than the 1500 or mile in racing terms. It is a hell of a race. I have the higest respect to anyone who competes in this race. If your are using the 800 or 1/2 mile to train for longer distances I'd recomend you run at your mile pace maby slightly faster, but not at race pace. I would only do this once a week max. I'd run for 30-45 minuets at a slow pace if your just starting out. Closer to 30 minuts. There is also nothing wrong with walking breaks if you need them.
Yeah typically I will do 3 miles a few times a week. Was thinking about adding this is to one of the days.
i just ran roughly 2.75 miles in 19mins, what kinda time is this?? i started off slowly and picked the pace up through out the run, for the last half mile i was goin pretty fast, also the route i ran is half up hill and half down hill is 19mins a good time?
You really shouldn't worry about time, you should try to increase the distance and add sprints in. It's nice to run it faster than you did before. But if you don't reach a certain time don't sweat it lol
I heard from runners that 800 meters (1/2 mile) is the toughest kind of running sport, save 100km iron man runs. Apparently the runners will be basically running at a pace that feels like sprinting for two laps. Highly mental competition, and highly strategic for the guys running 1st and 2nd. I can do a 22-25 min 3 mile but I don't think I can sprint flat out for 2 laps. I don't think I'll even try soon; I'll probably end up with shin splints day afterwards.
The 800m is beyond stupid in terms of pain, I believe that's been proved by scientists to. I stupidly put my hand up to run a 800m race for my club about two months ago. I very stupidly presumed that the 40-60 mile weeks and regular 'speed' work typically between 1000m to 1600m range repeats would put me in good shape for it. I got dragged along for the first lap in under 60 then promptly fell apart somewhere between 500 and 600m, coming in last at 2.15. It seems the 800m is all about latic-acid and pain. There's a young lad (18/19) at my club who has a PB of 1.53 over 800m. He's also nearly two minutes faster than me on a 5K. Last few weeks I've been trying to train with him atleast once a week, heavy emphasis on 200m to 400m it seems. It seems to go under 2 mins on a 800m you are training more like a sprinter than concentrating on distance. Although I will be damned if everything isn't a contradiction. Google Seb Coe's training and then google Peter Snell's training and it couldn't be more different. Snell would train like a marathon runner :huh
I was talkng to a guy today whos a sports scientist, he was saying you can run at your max for 60-90 seconds. When im on a 3 mile run i always try and run the hardest i can for the last 100-200m.
