What's the difference? Is there a difference? Is it considered running when the guy you're rooting against does it? And is it Ring Generalship and Distance Control when your hero does it?

people who think ring generalship can only be done on the back foot don't know ****.

agressive fighters can have great ring generalship too.

Agreed, but boxers are often called runners by people who hate those boxers.

Yes. There's a certain fighter out there who was in a fight a couple of years ago and turned the fight into a track meet(unfortunately for this fighter, he wasn't fast enough). It seemed pretty obvious that from about round two on, this fighter was in survival mode. Even the announcers, who were biased towards this fighter, remarked how he was in constant retreat and trying to run out the clock. After the fight(in which he was stopped after basically quiting), all the fans of this fighter claimed he was putting on a "boxing clinic", before he ran out of gas and was stopped. These are the same fans that accuse other fighters of being runners that they aren't fond of. This same fighter put on another track meet a few matches later after getting warmed up early in the fight. His opponent even yelled at him to stop running. He was eventually stopped(again) and all his fans claimed he fought like a "warrior"

George Foreman had good Ring Generalship. He would bully people and corner them so he could wham them.

    Some examples:

Mike Tyson. He was great about closing the distance, cutting off the ring, etc..

Ricky Hatton. Forcing the action, controlling the fight tempo...except in the Pac fight...but I thought he did a great job against Floyd until the got popped.

Hagler called it running when SRL did it against him...however SRL fought a smart fight to me. PBF haters always call it running....BUT ITS NOT.

What cotto did in the later rounds against pacquiao WAS running.

This is actually true. A lot of people call Floyd a runner but I tend to think he's not. However, I think a guy like Dirrell is a genuine runner.

I think the difference is a guy like Floyd or Chad Dawson or Ivan Calderon(I've only seen a little bit of this guy so I could be way off-base here) utilizes a lot of lateral movement or timed movement to be in and out of range but always within range to set up their own counters. For instance, Floyd was fighting off his back foot against Hatton a lot but was able to make him miss while consistently tagging him. In Dawson-Johnson II Dawson found out that when he moved laterally he couldn't be hit but could always stay in range to unleash his own flurry(though he did dance around too much in the mid-rounds where it may have hurt him).

Dirrell on the other hand has a tendency to fly in and throw a combo, get out and be on the other side of the ring when he's in against a pressure fighter or big puncher. He doesn't throw a combo and step to the side to release pressure.

    That's my take anyways.

Thats the difference between what Floyd does vs what Floyd thinks he do.

Running is running weather or not I'm rooting for the guy. Example, I was pulling for DLH against Tito and thought he was outboxing Trinidad. Then came the last rounds and Oscar clearly was "running", it wasn't ring generalship, it was pussing out. In my opinion a true Champ dosn't resort to this just because he feels he has the fight won and just needs to play it safe.
