agreed that it doesn't mean you're fit, but a 10 mile run done at a good pace with some hills in it would definitley build your stamina for a 12 round fight, just ask Joe Calzaghe. I'm not ruling out sprints and interval training as they definetly help ur ring fitness, I just think people are too quick to rule out the old methods as they clearly worked and would get u in great shape.
He ran at least 6 miles. I was just using him as an example of a modern day fighter who runs long distances. It definetly had something to do with his fitness because he got very little sparring, so the rest was from a mixture of padwork, circuit training and bagwork.
i never said long distace running wasn't beneficial, i was arguing about running on an empty stomach anyhow i know that when calzaghe runs his distance he doesn't do it in one pace, he throws in some sprints too.
i always run on a empty stomach, i might have a mouthful of water just to have some fluid in me. I have always done it and have always beena good runner so it hasnt effected me badly. As far as i know if you run on a empty stomach your body will be forced to burn fat for energy. Back to MIK1000 point about running on a full stomach and getting a stitch i agree, you have to either wait for your food to digest or there is no way you can run at your best pace with a stomach full of food. After i run or train i always have a whey protein shake for recovery, so no harm done.
i can manage to run on an empty stomach for only 6 miles or less. if i will run for more than 10 miles, i had to eat a chocolate bar or a banana before or in the middle of the run.
Well even after all these posts there is nothing to convince me that running on an empty stomach has any proven benifit expcept to boast " Im old skool". All i know is i feel crap runnning on an empty stomach. And if i feel drained then i dont preform well ( not just running but all exercise). Each to their own i guess is a good conclusion! P.s maybe some people on here should be more open minded???:good
i agree some people should be open minded and i think on this subject what ever suits the individual is right for them. If you perform better ona empty stomach then dont eat before you train and if you feel drained on a empty stomach have something to eat. Pretty simple. You have to try these things out for your self.
I'm not saying don't run another time, I'm just saying that people have been running in the morning for generations so it clearly hasn't done them any harm. I'm not the one who has to be more open minded. and about feeling weak in the morning, it's only road work, u do it to get fitter so its not as if u need to be at your best. When you don't do it on an empty stomach e.g for comptetion, you'll notice a big difference and feel much fitter and therefore perform better.
the fighters from 1900 used to make themselves bleed, they used to think it was healthy, they also used to walk 10-15 miles and drink alcoholic drinks as part of their training diet why dont any of you 'old skool' folks follow that?
Relentless Great reading your posts. I know many trainers currently in the sport who allow their fighters to make the weight by running on very low carb diets and supplementing their diets with high protein, low carb drinks... What do you think of that method of weight reduction?
well if just losing the weight is the goal then its good, otherwise i wouldn't advise it at akk, your body runs on carbs, a boxers training regime is very demanding, i cant imagine how a fighter can go through a training session on a low carb diet. you see the thing is alot of those nutritionist from frank warren's sportsnetwork etc don't really understand the demands of boxing, they have the fighters following bodybuilding methods (high protein low carb for cutting) etc
