So I have not been working out AT ALL since February (I broke my leg). Just recently my leg feels ok so I started swimming since I still can't run for probably another month. I was wondering if you guys have any other ideas for working my cardio/stamina back up that keeps weight off my leg? Swimming is the best I could come up with....

Can you ride a bike? They have the ones where you can sit back in and it takes even more weight off your legs.
Hope your recovery goes well and is quick.

Yes I can! I just got a monthly membership to a fitness joint with a pool for me to swim in and they have bikes! I planned on going more swimming heavy to really get the stamina back in my arms, but you have a great idea with the bike. Anything specific I should be looking to do on the bike? They have some really nice ones with all kinds of different settings, etc.

Thanks for the words though; I can't wait to get back into the gym (and running again for that matter)

Yeh I thought about trying it but I think I will run into a few problems. I usually like to move around with the bag, which will be difficult and I might accidentally hurt my leg when instincts take over. I don't want to get ko'd from the bag (ala Zelenoff) . I'm not really supposed to be doing much right now. When im swimming I mainly use my arms too cause my ankle has been getting sore from kicking. I would love to get back into the speed bag but I don't have one! And I also think that the extra weight on my front leg might have an effect

I would take it slow, see how it feels. If everything is fine you can do intervals, long distance, speed work, etc.... Just about anything you enjoyed or did running.

You have access to a rowing machine? They do exist, but am just not sure how available they are. Heck, if ya had access to water and a boat and some oars, that'd get your cardio going too.

I know legs do come into play with them, but am thinking you could get around working the hurt leg quite a bit rowing...dunno really, kinda grasping at straws. Sure is tough to work the cardio without the legs in play.

And yea, good luck and heal up fast. :good

Can you take a cycling class at the club you joined? Those are great for conditioning.

Yea, the cycle classes are hard as ****. I tried one after I worked out thinking it would be easy since there were like 5 40+ year old women doing it... It sucked hard though. I could hardly walk up the stairs the day after.

Running is great because you're using the body's largest muslce's working against gravity. This conditions your aerobic system by inducing the heart to work overtime making it more efficient at pumping blood to the muscles.

The next largest muscle group are the lats. Rowing would be the logical substitute if you can't pump your quads and glutes. :good

I wonder how swimming compares to rowing?

If it was a spinning class that is probably too much for your leg right now. Those classes are no joke.

I will check into this. They have about 30 bikes there (no joke) so I would expect that they do! Thanks for the idea

This might be a stupid question but is there a difference between a spinning class and a cycling class?

Its gotta be right up there. My lats and shoulders are REALLY burning halfways through my workouts lately (im not using my legs much so that might contribute to it). My arms are just really tired and heavy by the end of it; just like a day at the gym
