What were some of the instances whereby a fighter suffered heavy criticism, and you were guilty of Joining the Pack, but upon subsequent reflection you felt that you were perhaps a little too harsh and not altogether understanding or sympathetic enough, ? At the top end for many older citizens it may of been Ali and his refusal to accept induction into the armed services, Time and a greater understanding bought a change of perspective and viewpoint, But this was a Political and National situation, What were the "Localised" Fighter Situations where you may of been guilty of an unsympathectic "Rush to Judgement" !? a couple of loose examples.. John Mugarbi > I remember John Mugabi the famed Beast, and destroyer of Lt Middles, taking a Solid left hook from Duane Thomas and turning his back on Duane, and quitting fighting, leaving the Ref no option but to Halt Proceedings, John caught a hailstorm of Flak, Happy to dish it out ..but Couldnt or wouldnt Take it, seemed to be universal sentiment, However it transpired that John took a thumb in the eye, Only John knows how painful it was, A detached Retina may of been the fear, if Optically injured One's eyesight is too valuable to take chances with. John's sudden ceasation may of been more understandable with the full facts. Lennox Lewis > when Lennox was on his way up the Rankings He fought Mike Weaver, He Hurt Weaver in the First, But eased off sensing that he was still dangerous, Lennox proeeded to Soften up Weaver gradually over the next half a dozen rounds, then took him out clinically with a long right hand, Lennox got a lot of Flak for his cautious approach, not too long afterwards Another Prospect Carl 'The Truth' Williams, Who like Lennox had Weaver Shaken up in the first, Unlike Lennox however, Carl went out Gung-ho to Finish Weaver in the second, Result Weavers Big Left hook made the Acquintence of Carls Chin, it was all over for Carl..and that was 'The Truth' - Lennox's earlier Caution was proved to be very sensible indeed. and not worthy of some of the criticism received. Any Other reflections on personal pangs of Guily for an Unsympathetic and Unfair Rush to Judgement on a Fighter ?
Good observation on the Lewis/Williams/Weaver scenario. Though tbph....I've only seen the fight after Lewis' rise to the top. But good shout
For me Carl Froch is a pretty good example. Before the Super 6 started I viewer the man as nothing more as a crude slugger who got lucky taking the WBC belt. Nowadays he's the #1 rated SMW
Chitownfightfan - ooops ! My memory played tricks -- Carl got to Mike first - Lennox Looked and Learned... So even more reason for the Careful Approach !? and less reason for the criticism ?
I always thought Canelo was a little bit of a hypejob and I was kind of right but I piled on a little too much, but he's earned my respect the old fashioned hard way. I wish more fighters had his cojones and would be willing to take on all comers. He's a credit to the sport.
Still good shout. Had Wlad done the same and played ATTN to Rahman v Sanders he may have had his dignity spared. Had Vitali took more caution.... He might have been spared a VERY NEAR KO1 LOSS just the same
