Can't blame him really, he lost his best to injury and illness. But it's five years nearly since he's met a ranked contender and that's not changing tonight when he takes on Francesco Pianeta. Weigh in stuff:

Chagaev is 246lbs, way too heavy for him, Pianeta is 242.

Who remains interested in Chagaev and the belt he's dragging about? Think he'll make another appearance in the top 10 any time soon? Anyone think he could be beaten tonight?

    And all that there.

Prime Chagaev beats Pianeta without too many problems. I think Chaggy's more shot than people think though, he hasn't faced anyone even as good as Pianeta in many years, and has looked horrible in the fights he's had the last few years. I take Pianeta in a decision in this one, unless its a robbery.

I expect Pianeta to beat him actually.

He can continue his "reigning" with guys like Pianeta, Oquendo an Brown. But seriously, he needs to either retire or fight a real contender.

It's been a while since I've last saw Chagaev fight, maybe 2-3 years ago now, even back then he was fat, slow and just awful. If he continued on that downward spiral of decline then he's probably not even good enough to beat Pianeta anymore.

And what's your evidence of that?

I think Pianeta wins tonight, then loses to Fres who beats Browne. Fres vs Wlad oct 2016.

Really? Chagaev is way past his best but he's always had a slab of granite for a chin. I've only ever seen him dropped twice, once in the Olympics IIRC and by a prime Wlad who was at his best that night, and even then he wasn't hurt by the punch. I'm sure I remember seeing a different camera angle at the time where it showed Wlad had actually stepped on his foot as the punch landed too. That said, although I've always liked Chag, I haven't really seen hardly any of his more recent outings so maybe even his punch resistance is a mere shell of what it once was now too.

I'm thinking it could be an out on his feet stoppage or because he's gassed like Andrade Bute. Which wouldn't shock me, but not an out and out KO.

Not sure about KO, but Pianeta should take this if Chagaev shows up as awful as he did against Oquendo.

He was dreadful in that match and that was a year ago and he's still fat.
