I think Pianeta is a little better than some credit him with but Chagaev must have really fallen a lot for you to say that.
I had it on at the time but to be honest I got bored pretty quickly and barely paid any attention to it at all. The whole event in Grozny was much more spectacular than the few rounds of the fight I bothered watching.
Yeah I got pretty bored too. And I'm solely basing my opinion of that match on the outcome of this one, I wouldn't doubt it going to the cards as well, in fact that's the most likely outcome, but a KO shouldn't be taken off the table either.
Oquendo can make a lot of people look bad, even at this stage of his career.... But yeah Chaggy isn't looking too sharp at this point.
I'd like to see Beterbiev vs Ward in Grozny with a local ref. lol This is an in shape Chagaev. Beating the legendary Felix Savon at just 19 years of age IIRC. You can actually see Chagaev's muscles here. lol [YT]I4KFsDIV3zI[/YT] [YT]BNarW_0XCYQ[/YT]
Chagaev turned pro at around 205 and I have those fights (not sure if they're up on YT yet). But he needed more bulk, in fairness. He kept his engine despite teh additional weight until the hepatitis/Achilles though. Which was impressive. He was excellent in his day. I don't get a lot of support for this opinion, but Ii think he was the #3 HW of the Klitschko era.
IMO-At one point he was the clear #3 behind the Klitschko's, always thought him Vs Haye would have been interesting
I rate him highly too, great technician, granite chin, and good power in that thumping left cross of his. I've always felt he should be about 15st max in optimum condition and that he could've boiled himself down to CW had he really wanted to and then rehydrated back up to 15st after the weigh in. That said, I'm fairly sure the CW limit was 13st 8lbs back then and no way was that doable for him.
Was that because Chag had some kind of disease? I'm sure Haye aint' clean either after sleeping with over 200 men atsch
