Chagaev will be back in the ring on February 7th, taking on Carl Davis Drumond (26-0) from Costa Rica. The two will be headlining a card that also features Kotelnik vs Maidana for the WBA Light Welterweight Title. Source: http://www.boxing.de/news/single-ne...an-chagaev-greift-gegen-carl-davis-dr/48.html Drumond has had a steady tomato can diet but might have a slight puncher's chance. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=308999&cat=boxer
What about the WBA world title? If Chagaev loses, does Drumond then have the right to face the winner of Valuev-Holyfield?
I don't know anything about Carl Davis Drummond, but I DO know that Ruslan Chageav needs to do something serious if he intends to remain as a big part of the heavyweight picture. For the past two years, he has made only one appearance annually, and the results of most of his fights as of late have ended in either split or majority decisions. His frequent injury status does not help matters, and may eventually prove to be his undoing. Chagaev is a good fighter with decent boxing skills, good left hook, chin, and plenty of stamina. He's also not intimidated by the big boys of the division. I hope 2009 is a more productive year for him. Ruslan needs a big win to keep his career alive and he needs it now.
Ah! The enigmatic Carl Davis Drumond! The guy who's got himself ranked in the top 10 or 15 based on nothing at all. Although if he's a King fighter, I guess that explains that. I have time for Chagaev. I think he's got skills. But these injury layoffs have really hurt his career, and there's no guarantee he'll be quite the same either. I hope for a good victory here and on to bigger things.
Chagaev is an AWESOME HW when he is fit to fight. I question whether his injury will hamper him, but I honestly think he's one of the best southpaw HW's ever. As good as Michael Moorer and Chris Byrd, to me.
I understand your sentiments, but in all fairness, he did manage to dent Nikolay Valuev's record a tad less than two years ago. Thats more than anyone ( including Wlad ), has done as of late. I don't think he should be considered top 3, but a top 5 slot is fair, or at least until we can see what he's got left.
He's only 30. Despite the annoying injuries, Chagaev has the skill to be a player rather quickly. You know as well as I do he'll get a title shot again at some point. Skill-wise he's a top 5 heavyweight, easily.
I don't think this tells the whole story. 1.His avenged loss came 3 years after the fact, when his conqueror was basically done for. He had lost the only fight that he had in two years, and had been nursing a retina injury. 2. His fights with Sultan Ibragimov and Tony Thompson were jokes, and unifying the WBO trincket was not something that was that big of a deal.\ I don't think these things " Dwarf ", Chagaev beating a 46-0 titlist (who wlad has somehow managed to stear clear of ), and who stood more than a foot taller than himself.
Well, Evander Holyfield is fighting for the title again, despite being 46 years of age, and without a meaningful win in years. So I suppose anythings possible.
