Wlad's ONLY weakness is his chin. Haye's speed is on a whole other level than everyone Wlad's fought since Sanders, Haye is the only fighter out there who I've give a fair shot to dethrone Wlad. I'd favor Klitschko but to say that a puncher of Haye's ability has no shot is a bit much imo
Maybe so. But Wlad's chin isn't as bad as his critics say it is. He took a flush shot to the jaw from Chagaev and Peter and took it well. Haye will have to hit harder than Peter and land a few good one if he to win. I think Haye is an easy fight for Wlad.
Since the other relevant thread here appears to have died, allow me to repeat: That was marginally more lopsided than I had expected- I was imagining, or at least hoping, that Chagaev would have some more gears to bring to the table than what he had shown in the past. He had looked on the lethargic, one-dimensional and limited side of things in previous outings, but I had reasoned that perhaps he was the sort of fighter who did just enough to win and fought to the level of his opposition. Evidently, this is not the case. He showed nothing new against Wlad, and seemed utterly incapable of adapting his gameplan. Surely he realized he was losing every round of the fight, but he continued with almost exactly the same failed pattern (which was more or less the same one he had used against the likes of Valuev and Ruiz) nevertheless. He obviously wasn't going to be able to beat Wlad with slickness, nor could he outjab him, but he was unwilling to commit to a pressure style- a move which was clearly necessary if he were to have a serious chance at getting himself into this fight. It did look as though he was attempting to play possum at the end of the ninth by laying on the ropes, trying to get Wlad to go for the kill and really commit to some punches, which could potentially have created an opening, but Wlad simply intelligently stood back and continued peppering him from long range, and Chagaev had no answer. I'll now lend less credence to the proposition that Chagaev would stand a serious chance against most of the fighters on this list. He is not particularly fast, he has shown little in the way of punching power against noteworthy opposition, his punches lack zip and snap, he hasn't shown much adaptability, and he has no really special attributes to compensate. He does have a good defense with his tight guard and a consistently well-tucked chin (speaking of which, I am not convinced his lack of prior stoppage losses speaks to a granite jaw quite so much as a tight defense and cautious style- Wlad was barely committing to his shots today, and even the one which put Chagaev down didn't look to be anything close to his strongest), has solid lateral movement, puts punches together fairly well, and doesn't have a lot of glaring weaknesses- essentially the right mixture of attributes to enable him to sneak close decisions off slow, inactive opponents like Valuev and Ruiz, but nothing which can make him a real threat on the highest level. He would not have any enormous advantages in height, reach, power, speed, stamina, or skill on most any of the fighters in question- more or less his only substantial edge would be in weight (aided by the substantial gut he carries even at 225). Most of the '50s fighters listed herein possessed considerably more in the way of talent, energy, variety and genuinely outstanding skills or attributes, which would see them at a considerable advantage over the likes of Chagaev.
Vitali is a big man with really heavy hands, i think you are grossly underestimating Vitalis power. Only one guy has ever went the distance with him.
Hopefully Haye ,if he fights Wlad ,will try and make him do what he doesn't want to do.Haye has a punchers chance imo. Win or lose ,I expect it to be a damn sight more entertaining than the highly paid sparring match Wlad just engaged in. Chagev didnt quit ,neither did he fight to win he fought to survive, imo. It was about as competitve as Holmes Cobb ,probably less so ,and at least Randy tried.I'm just glad I didnt pay for this onesided beat down. Chagaev top 5 ? Does the phrase credibility gap come to mind?
Very apt, actually as that's about what the fight amounted to ,of course he got considerably more than he would have done if he was a sparring partner. Wlad's performance? Dominant Ruslan's performance ? Dismal If I had made that asinine statement about Chagaev being a top 5 contender in other eras I would be in hiding today
Yeah because Charles/Patterson/Walcott never lost to a fighter of Chagaev's level right?? Layne anyone?
Charles was down 30 times in his career and lost 20 times in the 1950's. He was KO'd by a middle weight, suffered a 1 KO punch for the count, and quit in a fight. Patterson lost to the likes of Joey Maxim, has two Walcott, lost 17 times in his career, some of which were at the hands of journeyman. Chagaev has only lost once, and it was to an ATG. So all of a sudden he sucks? Yeah-- this is a hard comparison to make. Clearly anyone with a brian knows Chagaev only loss isn't half as bad as the above men's defeats. The more SuzeQ remarks about assinine statements, the more detail I will add for a fair minded compare and contrast. Perhaps I'll even take my the act to other boards where he posts on.
Well, the above men did face better competition on average. But Chagaev would be a formidable contender. In fact, i think all "he would've been champion" or "wouldn't have made the top10 in other times" threads are rather silly.
Layne came to fight he was not good defensively ,but until Marciano wrecked him, he was a big punching contender .
Yes, and he was ranked in the top5 and holds, if memory serves me well, wins over prime versions of either Charles or Walcott, or both. That was my point.
Listen dough nut,it was me who said your statement was asinine.not Suzie You are probably getting bullets from so many directions ,you have lost track of their trajectory. I told you he was moderate BEFORE THE FIGHT,and I have been totally vindicated. Go home and grow yourself a new rectum ,because your's has just been torn out! "Clearly anyone with a Brian" .? Well thats obviously your problem You need to get a BRAIN ,instead of a BRIAN :nono
