I think most of what needs to be said here has been said. In summation: Russ Anber has a blatant and outrageous agenda towards discrediting Marciano, Marciano's title challengers were all very deserving of their shots, arguments that Marciano avoided Nino Valdes are very flimsy given that RING Magazine and the NYSAC ruled Charles a more worthy challenger at the time he received his shots and Valdes was specifically lined up for a title shot in Miami in late 1955 before he was beaten by a loudly-campaigning Moore, and Marciano's track record in terms of facing the top challenger for his title on a consistent, fight-by-fight basis during his title reign is absolutely unmatched within the history of heavyweight boxing.
:good :good :good well said, this Russ has an agenda and a very weak arguement and Mendoza is really stretching it
Rock was just thrown out as cannon fodder early in his career and , after knocking out the cannons he got a real trainer and manager. This guy Anber lies, as he talks about the protégé being brought along on easy meat, while insinuating Rock had hamburger from the get go. That is not true, he was tossed into the ring to add a win to folks with a future. He took care of thier future by knocking the young lions out. After he got a trainer and a manager, yep he got fed easy meat, until he learned to box a bit. Was it Anber insuuating that Rock got gift decisons? LaStrada number 1 was tight, but as I read, only the home town papers had LaStrada winning, all the out of town papers had Rock winning a close fight. No where else had I read that Rock had the judges in his back pocket. This is a new slant.....well, after all he was Italian...right? I'm surprised no one has brought up the number of times he fought his own brother inthe ring, 10 or 15 times. His brother later made the masks for Mission Impossible. Valdez, was given the chance to fight an eleminator. What all the young guys here just don't got in their bones, is the single line of contenders who had to fight, and fight often, and continue to fight as High a Rated Contender one could get, or some one Else would take your place in the line. Valdez did not do that as good as Charles...and Charles had the Champion bonus going for him. Again most forget, that Charles earned the Undisputed Championship Title, by beating the hell out of everyone else 6 or 7 fights, that are not counted for some reason, as "Championship fights" when he was Disputed Champ...including Walcott twice*, not that there were any others disputing him, really. He was the Belt champ..with the other belt vacant. So for a hell of a long time he'd been fighting and mostly winning Championship fights. No one here is complaining about Charles fighting Walcott a third time for the Championship, when he lost to him. It has been said like a broken record here to the Latin fella, Charles fought better comp, when Valdez got also beaten, and by Light Heavy's....today if a heavy contender couldn't whip the hell out of a Light Heavy easy, he'd not be thought much. Even if Valdez beat Charles, on points, he did not beat him up....ok. He did not whip his ass, he just beat him on points. As for Valdez not fighting Moore, again you must remember it was the single contender line, not today where the contender chooses which of four champs he wants to fight. By not fighting Moore, he gave up his rating. Even today, if the number one is told to fight the number 2 in an elemination fight, and refuses he loses his number 1 rating. What the hell is the problem understanding that.
