If/when Mares ever moves to feather, and GRJ is still there at the weight, and both are still with GB, and both are still undefeated, who do you think would win?

Hard to say how good Russell will be. Right now Mares is a class above.

I would have to go with Gary. He is a power puncher with precision that get time his shots and set them up. On the other side, if Mares gets a small ring and Caiz jr as a ref, he can rush in with his head, throw elbows and low blows, and hit Gary in the back, and when Gary pushes Abner's head down like Moreno did to avoid a headbutt Caiz can start taking points away --- from Gary.

However, I believe that Gary would likely KO Mares - but we really haven't seen Gary fight a very high caliber fighter or even a B+ fighter yet.

It will be interesting to see how Gary does against the top 10 featherweights, or even the top 25.....come on Gary step it up

    This.

Russell has beaten no one of note. Meanwhile Mares has cleaned up 118 and 122. Of course all the brothers will be saying Russell when we do not even know if he can beat the elite at 126.

Hey how about we throw Russell in with someone who is in his division already.

    Bring on Mikey!!

An interesting aspect to consider is that GRJ is not runner. He is a pocket fighter who even prefers to walk his opponents down; so how he would deal with Mares' relentless pressure at times, being forced to fight off his back foot, and being made uncomfortable isn't something that Russell has had to deal with thus far in his career.

My initial thinking is that GRJ would pick Mares apart, but his composure will surely get tested in ways that we haven't seen yet by Mares' charging style.

Mares isn't a puncher at 122...and he surely won't be at 126. We'll have to see Gary step it up, but his precision punching would be trouble.

Never use the words "Mares" and "cleaned up" in the same sentence.

I think mares would take it. he doesn't seem as skilled as Russell but he possesses the intangibles to win this fight. we also haven't seen Gary against worldclass class opposition as of yet, where as mares is already proven here, making it difficult to make an assessment . in the end I think mares brings too much pressure and wins a ud.

I think Gary would ko Mares. Of course this is just based on potential,bc havnt seen Gary in with anyone that is half the fighter Mares is.

Hopefully he hs a big year in 2013 like he predicts.

    :thumbsup Sensible post.

Though I tend to agree that GRJ would win by stoppage.

I envision Russell being able to regularly find the target. His combination of speed and power is something that Mares has never seen and I think he might wind up getting shell shocked.
