I was so excited for this fight. And it was Yaegashi who brought the extra unexpected to the table that made this one of my personal favorite watches of the year. Loved these guys for the whole decade straight, I routinely have listed both among my "10 favorite actives" whenever that thread comes up every so often. Mthalane I've repped here as much as any or more, guy is just great. And a beast.

Enjoyable fight. Akira was very game and tough but he was taking too many clean hard shots and was busted up and hurt numerous times in those last few rounds.

As for the stoppage, file it under "the guy that lost did need to be saved, and had been hurt very badly a bit earlier in the round, but the ref just chose a weird as hell moment to actually move in (and in this case, literally could have withheld for one second, and the bell would've given Yaegashi a chance to regroup on his stool for a minute... but oh well, probably would have gotten eaten alive in a tenth round anyway :nusenuse:)

So not a bad stoppage, in broad terms, on principle, but a bad one in terms of the moment chosen.

I had it even going into that 9th. I called the result early on even when Yaegashi was doing his best work, so I'm not surprised.

Oh man, I thought every hardcore was into Mthalane... He's so damn good and his career is among the best examples ever of "having the deck stacked against him."

I had it 5-3 Mthalane going into the 9. And I thought Yaegashi was tired from round 6 onwards.

This round table of Top Rank analysts is so awkward.

Tessitore, Kriegel, Bradley, and Ward are so close together all their knees are touching. Hard nope from me. I wouldn't be able to hold eye contact and discuss the sport while playing footsie with three other dudes.

Never liked him, sorry.... actually I'm not. He's a dried up old **** at this point, I'm sick of seeing him, time for him to go away.

They're bandying about the usual suspects for 2019 Fighter of the Year as seen on this board, Twitter, and elsewhere... Canelo, Inoue, TTT - and then outta nowhere Kriegel's dumb ass says you can make as strong a case for Wider as for Taylor. :duh GTFOH.

I give a little more credence to Joe Tessitore's dark horse, pick, actually. Emmanuel Navarrete, would never have considered mentioning him in that conversation, but ...yeah. Really good year. 4-0 (4) in world title fights, started off by stopping Dogboe in their rematch to prove he was no fluke, then defended against three solid (if not extraordinary) contenders.

It brought me immense joy seeing Melindo's cannibal serial killer looking ass bashed goofy by Ken Shiro, hopefully a similar fate awaits Moruti's toilet ghoulie looking ass. Anyone who beats up and stops Akira is a mortal enemy of mine.:deal:

Odd timing for the stoppage, but won't complain, he was spent.
    Thank you Akira!
