Garcia claimed he intends on moving up to 140 full time after his loss to Davis. How does everybody see him doing at the weight? Can he atleast manage to win a title there? Currently Josh Taylor holds the WBO title and will put it on the line against Teofimo Lopez in not too long. Albert Puello holds the WBA title Subriel Matias holds the IBF title And Regis Prograis holds the WBC title How does Ryan Garcia do against these guys?
None, he's a journeyman now. His career at the top is over. He had a lot of promise, but all the questions I had of him were answered against Davis. The rumors were true, he is an untrainable fighter with no ring IQ. All his close advisors (including Golden Boy) told him not to take this fight, he took it anyway and lost big time. All his coaches told him to stick to the game plan and box, he lasted 1 round before getting reckless in round 2 and payed for it (he himself admitted this). Canelo said that Ryan was arrogant and would focus on jogging rather than listen Reynoso about what to work on, Goosen confirmed this about Ryan in his interviews. Goosen said Ryan does his own workout routines because "Ryan has his own way of doing things". Ryan won't learn anything from his fights because he isn't a student, he doesn't let others tell him what to do. Such mentality cannot learn boxing because there is no change in habits. Fighters that grow are those that actually listen to their corners and try to implement the advice given to them. Ryan, by his very own admission, does not and admits he easily gets carried away and does what he wants.
He could conceivably beat any one of those guys, but only if he learns from the Davis loss and works hard. He has to really want it, of course. He has time to learn & develop.
Garcia is a fighter with good pop and some gifted physical attributes but suspect chin, liver and heart. He needs to have a long talk with himself and figure out if he wants to become and accomplished boxer or a wealthy "influencer".
This guy might not be champ anymore soon, actually. He failed a drug test so he's been replaced in the Romero fight, which is apparently still going ahead on the 13th. Still not sure what's happening with the title if they strip him though, at first it seemed like Romero and Barroso were gonna fight for it but then I read something else saying it might be between two other people at a later date, or maybe even Romero-Barroso would be rescheduled for it. But hey, with boxing, who the hell knows. On topic, I don't given Garcia too much of a chance at the top right now. Prograis, Matias and Taylor all decimate him. But as far as the future goes, he could recover from this as long as he's willing to improve his game and maybe stick with a plan instead of recklessly abandoning it. He's young, so he's still got time to improve as long as he's willing to put in the work.
He needs to step down the competition for a couple of fights @ 140lbs - work on fundamentals & gain some seasoning as he properly acclimates himself to the weight. before he even thinks about taking on any of the real killers at jr welter.
Golden Boy might be able to buy a vacant title for him or get him a fight with a weak champion in the future… But he’ll never be considered THE champion in any weight class. I’ve strongly questioned his mentality and heart in the past, the Tank fight only affirmed my suspicions.
I don't understand why he hasn't improved his boxing technique yet... he has a bad posture... he lowers his hands... he doesn't rotate his waist to hit with more force... he doesn't have footwork... he has the punch, the speed and a respectable punch resistance but I feel like he has a lot of work to do... he says he will take two fights and then go for a good fighter... nk it's about having more experience it's about learning to box.
I don’t think his chin is suspect at all. Yea, he got knocked down, but he got up just as quick as he was knocked down. He wasn’t dazed, didn’t wobble, didn’t stagger. He took that punch as well anyone could have. That punch knocks out mostly everyone else. He got up from it and came right back into the fire and stood right in front of Tank. But I agree that his heart is very suspect. I see Victor Ortiz jr now. Physical abilities all around but that’s it. Of course he can make a huge comeback but he has some growing up to do.
He will not win a title unless he improves his offense and learns some defense. He has a lot of work to do.
