Ryan Rhodes withdraws from European title fight with Konecny

Just a gutted fan. Very few shouted the glory of Rhodes more than me during the time of the Moore win. Love going to the Sheffield shows and the nights Rhodes has had recently here but each notification about him seems to put us further away from seeing him in action in the big time in Sheff.

Plus I am a pessimist who does feel that if it does not happen soon Rhodes may miss out and may become a footnote to another fighter on the up. Obviously yous lot will do everything to make sure that is not the case.


Also from a fans point of view....the Konecny fight was awesome and a not to be missed event.

 

Any 'momentum' achieved by Rhodes is past tense I fear. Moore losing to an obscure European in his next fight took some of the gloss off Rhodes victory. Then two fights in the last 18 months, one of those against the fearsome Rocky Junior (who had only faced TWO fighters with winning records prior to Rhodes) have done little to improve his chances of gaining a 'world' title fight

He should have fought Konecny the first time it was mooted, a victory there (not that it was a certainty) and EBU champion would have put him in a stronger position then he is now

Not been the best of runs since Moore, hopefully something can be sorted for him.

 

To be fare mate, he's wbc no.3 and ibf no.3, so i don't think the konecny fight not happening has hurt him.
The wbc not knowing what they wanted to do wit their title for a while and then making two welterweight matches for their championship has.
Sometimes when u get a lofty ranking, it can be a pain as u have to play a waiting game until the chance comes, unless u get a FINAL eliminator, a high ranking doesn't count for **** really.

 

See your point Dave, but Konecny has shot up the ratings on the basis of the EBU title. The WBC have embarrassed themselves TWICE with the Lightmiddle title, Margarito didn't deserve the opportunity (in all honestly he should never have been allowed to contest ANY title again after the handwrap caper) if Paq wanted to win a 154lbs title he should have been required to fight at 154lbs not some absurd 'Catchweight' created for his convenience. With that farce out of the way we have the EBU 'WELTERweight' champion contesting the vacant title, feck sake Rhodes and all the other GENUINE Lightmiddles in the WBC ratings must be seething!!

Let's hope something can happen with the IBF route, Bundrage is not a huge draw in the States so it should be easy to get him over to UK. Did notice on ESB last week talk of Bundrage v Brook, that would be a real sickener for Rhodes if ANOTHER Welterweight gets a shot before him!

Fingers crossed Rhodes has come a long way since dropping back to 11st be great to see him finish his career with a World title

 

Rob, you can't just pick whoever u want out of the top ten to be made a final eliminator. doesn't work that way.
I wish it was that simple but it's not.

A year ago, Rhodes was considered the most popular British fighter on this forum. How things change. Maybe thats a reflection on the expectations upon him.
This latest development just backs up Franks claim that he ducked his way out of the Mag 7.

That looks a little tough for Webb right now but well done if this turns out to be correct.

 

A softer Euro defence would have been better, but if this mandatory opponent is tasty, then it's a hiding to nothing if Rhodes has something else in the pipeline and he was to come unstuck. If Rhodes fears losing to Konecny then no problems in pulling out, but I guess a big Euro purse and retirement could be another option. I share the frustration with the Hatton WBC 154lbs challenge. Let's hope something else crops up for Ryan SOON. :good
