The main event (featuring la última pelea de El Diamante) isn't for several hours but the first bell is at 6:30pm local time in Cancún.

10 years ago did you ever think you'd still be watching Mijares all this time later, Butt? He's some kind of modern marvel in terms of reinventing himself and adjusting his career accordingly after several separate losses.

Fighting a guy, no less, who back then was a green prospect but is now somehow more washed up (by a lot) than is Mijares himself.

Mhm! It's weird matchmaking on several levels, but fighters at their respective career points need one another, matched against one another for maximum visibility even though neither will likely ever again compete for a serious title.

Update: Canal 5 in Mexico is currently showing an installment of the Michael Bay franchise of Transformers movies (no idea which, as I don't have deplorable taste in action schlock)...and we're still over an hour away from televised coverage of boxing.

Kind of disrespectful to Mijares how trash an undercard they put together for his swansong.

Hate to see Mijares go out like that. Sigh...

Mijares looked okay in the 1st & 2nd (and bigger than Wilfredo, strangely, although neither of them belong at lightweight...and that haircut of Papito's belongs on nobody) - although he was already eating a few overhand rights, with that old scar tissue laden skin on his face beginning to pulp up - but no excuses, he got cracked fair & square by the hungrier guy on the night, found himself inhaling blood through his nasal cavity and just couldn't hang with Papito's determination. Sad way to finish off. But make no mistake, he's done and never getting that ceremonial 60th pro victory. They've built this up practically all year (since very shortly after Berchelt vs. Mijares was canceled) as his farewell bout no matter the outcome; would be a massive loss of face to go back on that.

At the same time, you have to give due props to Vázquez. He walked through some hairy moments early, and came in with his chin ravaged by the wars of his 2010-2016 peak & decline period...and yet he just stuck with his game plan and kept throwing fastballs at the inordinately experienced technician whom most probably would've picked, on paper, to easily outbox Vázquez with both eyes closed and one hand behind his back - and got to him with the right shots to score the upset. Respect.

 God, that's horrific, I didn't think it would look that bad.

I like that old school haircut on Vázquez though, its a good look.
