To the original question, Joe Louis would get my vote as the top heavyweight as of 1955 with Johnson second.

I don't want to get involved in all the back and forth exchanges, but my take is Johnson probably had gone back quite a bit by 1912 to 1914. He was 34 to 36 and seemed to be living high between fights. I believe that would take a toll. Langford on the other hand was improved since 1906. Doesn't mean Langford wins in a 1912 to 1914 fight, but the odds have to be close.

Johnson of course he's the greatest. Even Jeffries, the second greatest acknowledged he could not beat Johnson even at his best. The man had no weaknesses like Ali N Louis

Jack Dempsey was fairly active as the world heavyweight champion until after his successful title defense against Georges Carpentier in 1921. After that huge payday in the bout with Carpentier, Dempsey fought twice during 1923, once during 1926 and twice during 1927. Afterwards, Dempsey retired for good except for fighting in exhibitions.

I wonder what would have happened to Dempsey if there weren't any million-dollar gates during the 1920s. Would he have fought more frequently? If so, would he have remained sharp as late as 1926 or 1927 under such circumstances?

Do you think Ali would get punked by O'Brien over 6 rounds? Do you think Ali would not find a way to emphatically win against Hart over 20 rounds? Would Choynski really spark Ali? Would Jim Johnson win the crowd decision over Ali?

Lay of the hard stuff, brah

u talking lightheavies? Ali did take his licks vs Foster, the only man to cut Ali but a huge 40 pound weight diff was too much for Bobby to overcome

My man may not have the title reign of Louis but suceeded where Louis couldnt have, getting a title shot

PLUS Lil Artha could end a fight any time he wanted whereas Ali was strictly finesse

I know Ali was good but i dont think that he would find a way to get a decision over O'Brien, in a no decision Fight!
    :patsch

I dont see why Jim Johnson wouldnt win a crowd decision over Ali. Ken Norton didnt have any problem doing it, they were at a pretty similar level.

I am not sure if Joe Choynski would really spark Ali out, but he was a lot better than Henry Cooper and certainly hit an awful lot harder, and Henry Cooper nearly did it!

Choynsky might spark a relatively green supermiddleweight Ali, that's what Johnson was when he met Choynsky.
The O Brien no decision 6 rounder was hardly a win for Philadelphia Jack.

Jim Johnson was hanging on at the end of the fight with Jack ,and Jack fought 7 rounds with a broken arm, plus Jack was nearly 36 and had been out of the ring for a year and a half.Want to talk about Jimmy Young?

    Ridiculously stupid examples,are you drunk?

Why didn't he end the fight with Hart when there was a title shot on the line? Why didn't he finish an old ass O'Brien who was reddening his face with jabs? Why didn't he end the fight with Johnson when it was clear the crowd thought him to be losing? Why didn't he end the fight with Willard like that scrawny turnip thrower did a few years later?

Or were all his fights fixes and carry jobs?

I see the white man still holds as much hate for Jack as ever

that is fabrication - all of it

u see Jack's face reddened in blk N white photos? damn liar

the nerve u have to come on ESB and expect to get away with it? NOT ON MY BEAT

Johnson TOYED with Hart like cat N mouse, talking to him taunting him - that's why! It was just his way!

u need to watch unforgivable blackness and educate yourself becuz your fabrications will NEVER fool someone educated on the subject and u will only get u ridicule

Jack became the first ever blk man to win the title, no connections in the famous fight where the cameras stop rolling to spare the white man the humiliation

jack only saves his power for SERIOUS threats like Ketchel

Just an exhibition at first until Stan got cute and decked him. No standing eight at that time. when Stan goes after him, Jack put him out just like that!

barely getting to his feet, without leverage and still only took one shot putting him out cold and had his teeth removed from his glove

so please, no more fabrications about O'brien. even the others are pointing out your mistakes

Jeffres stated before the fight that should Johnson win he would retire rather than defend against him.
Old ass O Brien was 6 months older than Johnson. As it was a no decision fight, and O Brien was no puncher,Johnson took the opportunity to
come in out of shape, papers commented on his flabby appearance.
Johnson fought the last seven rounds of his fight with much younger Battling Jim withh a broken arm and it was Jim who was hanging on at at the end .
    Still pissed?
