I liked Toby , he often dropped in at our gym if he had his car fixed at a local car body shop that dealt with radiators too... Toby sadly took his own life a day ago after refereeing several bouts at the MGM on Saturday.. he refereed Matthew Hattons fight with Ben Tackie.. I know very little at the minute but why he took his own life , he must have been very very low.. remember Mitch Halpern who referee'd Tyson v Holyfield.. he took his life also, and the referee Richard Greene who was said to have done the same, he referee'd Holmes v Ali.. Any respectful comments..?
Whenever anyone mentions their picks for best referee, usually the names "Kenny Bayless" or "Steve Smoger" are listed. Toby Gibson should have been included in that discussion, because I don't recall him really being involved in a major controversy, or allowing himself to get in the way of the action in any fight he officiated. Rest in Peace, Toby.
RIP, Toby. I hadn't heard of him, but for a boxing referee, that's a compliment and the farthest thing from an insult.
