Just learned that Joe Miceli died -- saddens me. He's as vivid now as when I watched him train at Stillman's Gym and fight locally at the old Garden, St. Nick's and Eastern Parkway in the '40s and '50s.

Whatta left hook!! It was all he had (as a converted southpaw), but it came from the floor and he could double and triple it to the head and body.

Fought the best welters and had his good, great, and awful nights, but was a crowd pleaser that will be missed.

Hey, J. Sorry to hear it. Can't say I know much about him, but I can see he means alot to you, and it's always sad when our worlds get a little smaller. Take care buddy, Ck.

I knew Joe very well as we sat next to each other at every Ring 8 Board meeting. We also Inducted him into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame on November 14, 2002.

I sent out an E-Mail to as many boxing people I could and I would like to put it here as well.

I just got the word that former World Rated Welterweight Contender from the 1950's, Joe Miceli passed away early yesterday evening (July 18th). Joe fought 12 World Champions during his Professional career BUT never received a Title shot. He beat Ike Williams 2 out 3 times, Bud Smith twice, Virgil Akins, Johnny Saxton, fought a draw with Joey Giardello and lost a very close decision to Kid Gavilan.

He was a very active member of Ring 8, New York City’s chapter of the Veterans Boxing Association. Several years also they honored him as the UNCROWNED CHAMP presenting him with the BELT. In April of 1997, he was inducted into the SUFFOLK SPORTS HALL OF FAME.

He was also Inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame on November 14, 2002.

He's survived by his beloved wife Catherine Tuzzo of 53 years. Two sons, Anthony and Joseph, daughter-in-law Terri. His grandchildren, Alaina, Elizabeth, Tristan and baby NIcholas Joseph. Brothers Dominick, John and sister Marie.

Reposing at Branch Funeral Home @ 190 E. Main St., Smithtown (631-724-9500), Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Funeral Mass @ St. Anne's RC Church on 2nd Ave, Brentwood at 9:45 AM. Intombment to follow @ 1st Calvery Cemetery, LI.

Again, we would like to ask that all the boxing people to try to attend the wake on Tuesday night starting at 7 PM, as we will be giving him a proper send off by having a Ceremony and the Final Toll count at 7:30.

Our Thoughts and Prayers goes out to his family, friends and fans.

    Thanks, Henry Hascup

..............Great to see you again, Henry. Hope all is well.

Sad to hear about Miceli. Can't say I ever saw him fight, but I know he was a mainstay in his time.

Damn.........this has been a rough month; first Mando Ramos, now Miceli. :verysad
