The saddest fight that sticks out was Holmes Ali, it was painful to watch. Jumbo Cummings and an old worn out Frazier was another, and when a 47 seven year old Duran took off his robe against 28 year old William Joppy I cringed and thought this won't be pretty. What are some that others remember?
Marciano vs Louis and Ali vs Holmes are obvious choices, but I found Camacho vs Leonard very sad to watch.
One of the saddest was Leonard vs Camacho. Ranks up their with Ali vs Berbick. Benitez vs Hamsho. Pryor vs Bobby Joe Young. R.Jones vs any of his last 5/6 fights even the ones he won. M.Taylor After Chavez. Chavez vs Delahoya. Delahoya vs Hopkins. Whitaker last few fights, M.Mccalum. Moral to the story, most fighters stay around far to long.
Vitali vs Arreola. Dude took an embarrassing battering and was never in the fight for one second of all 12 rounds... He was so confident and talked trash and ended up sobbing and slobbering and swearing in the post fight interview. Pretty sad to watch a guy you'd think is a pretty tough guy sobbing uncontrollably after getting thoroughly beaten.
Tyson in his last fight against mcbride. As someone who's followed Tyson from his very early fight s in the middle 80 s, to see him basically walk away from the fight like that, very sad.
Larry Holmes vs Texas Cobbs. Fight should have been stopped. A total mismatch resulting in a needless beating just so the ref could have his spotlight in the sun. Howard Cosell turned away from announcing boxing matches after that display. Larry Holmes vs Ali: Because it should have been stopped by the ref or his own corner much sooner. Benny Kid Parret vs Emile Griffith: Because it resulted in Paret's death due to Griffith's inability to forget pre fight insults and the ref's negligence. Ken Norton Vs Ali 3: Because it was a robbery and had Norton bawling and even Ali refused to be interviewed as he seemed to sense the injustice.
Defo ali v holmes and berbick. Even guys that hated ali must have felt a bit sad watching that. He went through his career doing what looked like the impossible first with liston then with foremann. It was an end of an era really. I d like to think that it was one of them times where even guys that hated him felt some sense of sympathy with him. Also include tyson v mcbride. Sad watching it. From seeing him coming through to a shell of his former self. Hatton v senchenko i ll add to the list also. Ricky gave everything over the years. But it became apparent after a few rounds he was pretty much done. Gave it a go but timing was way off. He should have worked his way back with a few easier fights first. But think he,d went too far in the personal life to bounce back and be competetive at the top level anymore. Just the realisation he kind of blew the last few years of his boxing career with his excess.
Hatton is an idiot. He was winning that fight and had been asked to start off with some 6-8-10 rounders, but he was adamant he wanted a 12 round fight. Had he listened to the people around him, he would have got the nod for the Sevchenko fight. You don't just take 3 years out and then jump back in with a respectable world class fighter.
