Saen Sor Ploenchit ("Somchai Chertchai") - Exciting Flyweight champion from Thailand

Saen Sor Ploenchit aka Somchai Sertchai was a very popular Thai fighter and often compared to Thai legend Pone Kingpetch due to his similar style of fighting. A gifted boxer with a solid jab although perhaps he loved to fight up close a little too often for his own good. He held the WBA title for two years and has beaten fighters such as Leo Gamez, David Griman, Hiroki Ioka, Jesus Rojas, Kim Yong Kang before losing it to Jose Bonilla. He would also end up fighting Japan's popular fighter Joichiro Tatsuyoshi in a fight he would lose before ultimately calling it quits.

As with most Thai fighters who were generally entertaining to watch for their natural fighting instinct Ploenchit was no exception and he was perhaps the most consistently exciting to watch.

Ploenchit's fights with Guzman, Ioka, Jang, and Gamez are probably some of the best Flyweight battles I've seen recently. Fantastic stuff from this Thai warrior. Would have been an interesting fight to see him against the likes of Too Sharp, Arbachakov, Sasakul, Sithbanprachan, Jimenez, or Romero. The 90s was quite a year for the Flyweight division.

Interestingly he was trained by none other than Cuban boxing coach Ismael Salas who has worked with notable fighters such as Nonito Donaire, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Kazuto Ioka, Jorge Linares, Danny Green, Carlos Adames, and Yordenis Ugas.
