Tom Sharkey versus Oscar Bonavena ,15rds modern gloves and rules. Does the old bruiser win ,or, does Ringo take it? This content is protected This content is protected
Sharkey outpoints him ... more effective aggression, far more speed and heart .. to me Oscar was a bit of a front runner...
Tom is going for it here. This content is protected This content is protected Interesting that Tom is bigger in the shoulders than Jeffries. This content is protected
Ringo easily - Oh come on. Because you were good in the old days......... (or just a bit more than crap) (And I am not an great Bonavena fan) Woler
Sharkey was a tough little guy, but even in his day he was small. Bonavena decisioned Chuvalo, a larger version of Sharkey. Oscar would beat Sharkey up at least as badly as Jeffries did. Now if you want a good scrap between oldies, put Sharkey in with Tommy Burns who was about the same size and could punch just as hard if not harder! ....
Your knowledge of Sharkey is a bit limited ... Sharkey was far better conditioned than Oscar who was a big time front runner and far faster ... in an ulgy brawl Tom decisions him in my book ...
Chuvalo was nothing like Sharkey. The only thing they had in common were great chins (Chuvalo's being the greatest ever, imo) and prodigious strength. Tommy Burns vs Sharkey would be a blowout. Nobody who was around back then put Burns in Sharkey's class on ANY level, especially not punching power. He was an underrated fighter but he wouldn't last 7 rounds with the Sailor. Horrible stylistic matchup for Burns. Oops..ok, just noticed you're from Canada. Now your comments make more sense
This would be a verry exciting fight to watch. I don't find myself coming down particularly strongly in favour of either fighter. They are both good enough to beat the other at their best and loose to them at their worst. Sharkey was the more acomplished of the two, but maybe he gets a bit over rated relative to his era in hindsight.
Sharkey made his reputation beating second-raters and going all those rounds with Jeffries, which says more about Jeffries than Sharkey. Sharkey was a crude brawler with a cast-iron chin. Bonavena would out-muscle the little guy, pushing him off with his big forearms and drilling him with jabs and right hands. In a '60s ring, Sharkey would last eight or ten rounds before the ref would step in to mop up the mess. Tommy was only an inch shorter than the ex-sailor and maybe 5 pounds lighter at his best. Burns was fast, had a terrific chin, great recovery powers, dynamite in either hand and more ring skills than 95% of the guys Sharkey fought. If Fitzsimmons could put Sharkey away twice with body punches, then Tommy would do the same because he was famous as an inside fighter. It wasn't for nothing that Joe Grim had the ref shorten the rounds to two minutes when he faced Tommy across the ring. Bonavena over caveman Sharkey by TKO. ...
Bonavena would beat Sharkey much like he beat Chuvalo...even if Sharkey and Chuvalo weren't exactly alike stylewise...and Ringo might have evenb stopped him.
