I do think that they are stylisticaly quite different. On the other hand I think that the fight would turn on the same factor, namely Marciano's better defence.
Marciano also hit harder than sharkey, was a much better finisher, better all around puncher, more skilled, better defense, better workrate, and was much tougher to knockout. Just an all around clear better fighter.
By all accounts. Granted, one's reputation and legacy is gleaned from newspaper clippings and the mouths of opponents who never faced Marciano for comparison's sake. The other's rep has grown since his retirement and is fairly comprehensively available on film.
It's trench warefare all the way. Marciano can't back Sharkey up and Tom doesn't want to. This fight resembles a bigger version of the Basilio-DeMarco classic but without the stoppage. The equally tough, strong(arguably stronger) and harder-hitting Sharkey batters Rocky inside, cutting and lumping him up. Both can take what the other dishes out and both have cuts and bruises at the final bell. Marciano's more advanced skills and defense see him through to a 15 round points win.
You can never say never. Look, I am not saying that it is so, but Sharkey could certainly bang. He iced Gus Ruhlin with a single punch in the first round. This is a guy that both Fitzsimmons and Jeffries needed rounds to put away. Also, the only other fighters who put Ruhlin down for the count were Fitzsimmons (no explaination required), and Colin Bell in his last fight ten years later, shortly before Ruhlins death.
It's hilarious some people actually believe Tom Sharkey was a bigger puncher than Rocky Marciano. O ya, he was a bigger puncher than Joe Louis too. Let's add Sonny Liston to that List. Thanks for the laughs
You act like Fitzsimmons and Jeffries were bigger punchers than Marciano. They weren't. Marciano beats both of them too.
