It wasn't news to anybody at the time. Look how many people actualy lasted the distance against him. Apart form Jeffries verry verry few, and virtualy all of those were fights scheduled for six rounds or less. Generaly either he stopped you or you stopped him.
Sounds dead on ...Sharkey was tremendously strong, had fast hands, was a very good puncher, had a good chin and could fight all night .. he was far superior to a Rex Layne but despite the excellent descriptions that exist about him in his prime I simply have not seen footage to place him over Marciano .. however to simply dismiss him shows a lack of knowledge of the man ...
Where is the proof Sharkey was far superior to Rex Layne? I certainly didn't see the evidence on film, and don't see the evidence in resume either. I think Sharkey and Layne are on the same level. Both strong, tough, durable heavyweight contenders.
Did Sharkey ever take on a black fighter? Layne did, quite a few. Sharkey deserves criticism if he drew the color line
I can see some striking similarities. They both displayed an aptitude for dealing with the best technical boxers of their era (Walcott, Charles/Corbett, McCoy, Choynski) but came up short against the best punchers and dominat champions (Marciano/Fitzsimmons Jeffries).
Sharkey fouled Choynski in both their fights, he was a dirty ******* inside the ropes. if he tried that stuff on Rocky, he would come second.
6'6 Denver Ed Martin, Frank Childs, Hank Griffin, Bob Armstrong, Jack Johnson, Klondike Haines, George Byers, Joe Butler. Not all of them, but some of these men were quite underrated.
If only because Marciano was better at judging what he could get away with. Curiously, Choynski wrote an article defending Sharkey against the charge that he was a dirty fighter!
Sharkey was on the slide by the time Martin was coming into contention. George Byers and Frank Childs were probably the best of the bunch when Sharkey was at his peak. Neither of them realy did enough to force the other top contenders to fight them. Sharkey used Bob Armstrong as a sparring partner, and you have to question how much pressure Sharkey was under to fight him. Nobody cared whether he fought Griffin or Haines.
