Mcguigan would probably do well early and maybe even hold a slight lead, but around the 6th Sanchez starts showing that hes on another level and would start outboxing, and countering him 2-1. By the 10th Mcguigan is busted up . Sanchez finishes him off in the 11th Sanchez tko 11
I wouldnt say mismatch. Far from it. McGuigan gives Sanchez problems from the first bell. I dont see either being KO'd and 15 rounds aint an issue. At the end of a hard fought 15 rounder i can see Sanchez hand being raised but not without a scare. McGuigan a better fighter than given credit for here in classic, due to a lot of peoples perception that hes not worthy of the HOF induction IMO.(i, too, dont think he should be in it).
No, because Sal would underestimate him, and he tended to perform to the perceived level of his competition. Barry was not Little Red, or Gomez, no kind of ATG or even a near ATG. Sanchez would spot him an early lead, then overtake him in the championship rounds.
It would have been a good fight. McGuigan's left hooking body attacks would cause Sanchez problems, big time. Salavador would eventually prevail over the distance, though. By a clear margin.
I think after a couple of competitive rounds, Salvador starts to hand Barry his ass on his way to a 11 round TKO.
Sanchez of 1982 drops and stops McGuigan of 1985 in a great battle of wills and skills............ Sanchez TKO12 McGuigan........ MR.BILL:good
McGuigan had enough to give Sanchez hell for 10 rounds, but eventually the Great Mexican would gain control an dominate the later rounds, and in particular the championship rounds. McGuigan had a fair ol' ticker in his pomp, so I do not see Sanchez stopping him, unless McGuigan's eyes go, which is possible... Sanchez WU15 maybe 9-6
I'd lean towards Sanchez but McGuigan is painfully underrated in my view. His head movement, punch slipping, and the way he'd slide in with beautiful footwork and jab are a technical masterpiece. In terms of reach McGuigan has a 70inch reach, which is perhaps why his fast snappy jab and straight right are so effective. Maybe they'd be more effective than Sals We all know how good Sanchez is but I see this fight being a back and forth technical war Sanchez is having no easy fight here and I wouldn't be suprised if Barry pulled the upset
Fair point, Sanchez was prone to the odd off day as well. McGuigan is giving prime Sanchez trouble, thus an off the boil Sanchez is in real danger of being blown of course...
Yes..I can agree with that pretty much..Barry would, by virtue of sheer bravado and ardor, based on nationalistic fervor, do pretty well for 7 or 8 rounds before the natural superiority in every area of Sanchez would assert itself. Sanchez would have his way from round 9 on, and only the great heart of McGuigan would keep him in the fight..a couple of knockdowns in the 11th would set the stage for a bloody and battered McGuigan being rescued by his corner at the end of the round..a 12th round tko for Salvador Sanchez.
A very good point about his head movement and punch slipping. I know it wasnt a defining or decisive moment or anything like that but watch McGuigan in the last 60-90 secs in the 15th round against Pedroza. He was making him miss for fun and he was almost as fresh as he was at the first.
A beatdown win / TKO for Sanchez much like he took apart Azumah Nelson in 1982....... However, McGuigan doesn't see round 15........... McGuigan gets stopped in 12 rds here........... Sanchez by TKO12 over McGuigan..... MR.BILLthumbsup
