Sal wins a UD in a very close fight with back and forth tight action over 15 rounds. Does anyone think it should have been a draw or that Castillo should have got the nod. I know back then there was more of a belief in beating the "champ" convincingly if you want the belt. What's your thoughts?
I havent seen the fight since i was a kid and dont remember how i scored it, but i do know a respected former Boxing Radio show host out here in LA who maintains to this day that Castillo got jobbed in that fight. I would like to see it again to post a scorecard.
Very close, with Sal getting outjabbed for stretches of the fight, but coming on strong late. I wouldn't call it a robbery by any means, but at the same time it would hardly have been the greatest injustice had Castillo been given it.
Just watched it right this minute. This is one of my favrouite Sanchez fights and also Castillo vs Arguello is another of my favrouites, but thats a sidenote. Lora was right when saying, 'Sal getting outjabbed'. Castillo was able to get off first and step in with his combinations and get back out of range again before Sanchez could counter him, this off-set Sanchez alot, particulary because of Castillo's annoying jab. Sanchez did begin to time Castillo and land counter-punches and this led to Castillo getting abit hesitant but he soon came back and started being first and Sanchez really did struggle. In the last rounds Sanchez just let his hands go and had sucess. My scorecard. Sanchez: 3,5,6,7,10,12,13,14,15 Castillo: 1,2,4,8,9,11 Total: 144-141 Sanchez (9-6) Sanchez WUD15 Castillo However there wer afew swing rounds, in particular rounds 3,4,13 and 15 IMO, these could have went either way, so depeding on how you scored them the fight could have gone to Castillo. Also I think Castillo did a good job in utilising Sanchez's weaknesses as Pat Cowdell did, by feinting and getting off first.
I agree that the champ should not always be given the nod in a really close match..I think a title could and should be won win the difference of a single point, but this much said, I remember this fight and Sanchez won it..it was close but he deserved it.
Tell you what though Castillo IMO reallyshowed he could hang with the top guys with this performance, he gave Arguello hell but couldnt keep it going but with sanchez he gave him hell for 15 rounds. What happened to castillo after this bout?
Sal is one of my favorite reasons for citing 15 rounds as the only true championship distance, and GP, your card reinforces that, as well as my recollection of how their match unfolded. I thought at the time that Sal won it with his characteristic championship round stretch run. Ruben was a great contender, but never a 15 round competitor. For a while though, it really looked like he'd get to a title, and he was certainly a popular television attraction.
Aye Sanchez powered down the stretch to win it, make it a twelve rounder and its a draw. seperates the men from the boys.
Yeah, this fight makes me think of what use is the 12 round fight. It seems a natural third part of the fight should unfold, that many unanswered questions can be resolved by those three rounds.
