Classic contributors: does anyone know for certain anything about (if he had one) Salvador Sanchez having an amateur career? Please share if you do.
I have the information somewhere. He didn’t have many fights. I think it was something like 14 or 15 amateur fights.
Thanks Chris. He must have been like 14 when he started, then. If you come across the info, please pass it on. Thanks a million
He had 9 ... went 9-0 ... some cool photos here as well http://www.salvadorsanchez.com/English/legacy.html https://wbcboxing.com/en/remembering-the-great-salvador-sanchez/
A terrific clean fighter and great champion unlike his counterpart Eusebio Pedroza who had to fight dirty to win when the chips were down.
I was at work on Aug 12 1982 when this Environmental Services Aide that only spoke Spanish, told me of the death of Salvador Sanchez in that tragic auto accident. Sanchez was scheduled to give Juan La Porte a rematch in Madison Square Garden on Sept 15 1982, then perhaps a bout against Alexis Arguello, sadly we will never know that outcome. Salvador was one of my favorite champions.
I see the confusion as I am finding several Mexican articles that has it at only 4 fights while his website has it at 9... .I think he won the Amateurs in Hidalgo auditorium.. but cant find that record .. Also there is a famous Mexican athletes write up that has him at 4 as well .. https://ceape.edomex.gob.mx/sites/ceape.edomex.gob.mx/files/Mexiquenses_3diciembre_baja-21-71.pdf " Young Salvador's ambition was to follow his wrestling idols and delve into the art of pankration. He was discovered in a gym and his trainers changed his course: he left the mask for the gloves. its virtues they were stratospheric, that's why his amateur career consisted of only four fights and he catapulted to professionalism at the age of 16. " The book on him and other famous Mexican fighters, De puno de letra , might have it ... maybe Chris has read it, I havent
I always thought Salvador Sanchez could beat Alexis Arguello, Arguello somewhat struggled against fighters who boxed him on the outside. Vilomar Fernandez comes to mind.
So far the best I can come up with is 4 fights per the most sources , but some said 9 .. did you ever get the answer to this? I dont know for sure and will start diving into the local papers in his hometown if I have to ,, But its so time consuming ... @ChrisJS any luck yet? or anyone else? help
This is not a fair or accurate take at all. Pedroza fought dirty when the chips were up, too. He was remarkably consistent in that regard.
