He was fantastic but did he honestly do enough before died to be considered the best latino fighter, or above Chavez to be no 1 mexican? Not really.

Two of his best wins are against the smaller Gomez, and an unprepared Nelson.
Great wins no doubt but he still didn't do enough for me to be say no 2 best ever...or even top 10.
    Great fighter of course.

I love Sanchez but I agree. I am fairly certain that in 2-3 more years he’d have done a lot more. I can’t see Pedroza beating him but you’ve also got to factor in that being such an active champion, it requires so much to stay unbeaten so he may have been susceptible to slip up where not expected. The same size is small which has helped his mystique vs. if he’d have carried on and lost.

I believe he’s a top four Mexican ever but I can’t put him in the all-time top 10 Latinos. He can’t rate above Duran, Jofre, Napoles, Monzon in any reasonable list and it would take some very creative thinking to justify him ahead of Ortiz, Chavez, Rodriguez, Gavilan, Olivares, Arguello.

I say this as one of the biggest Sanchez fans around. I do believe he was “better” than some of those guys but he wasn’t greater and sadly a lot of that is due to his shortened career. We can’t give him credit for things he didn’t do. What he did do in his short time was amazing though.

I remember a co worker told me of that fatal car accident that took the life of the great Salvador Sanchez. Just on July 21 1982 in Madison Square Garden, he last defended his WBC World Featherweight Title against Azumah Nelson, TKO 15. To me he was the real featherweight champion, he won the title from an all time great, Danny Little Red Lopez, fought a great 122 pounder and beat him very impressively, Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez. He had bigger game on the horizon, he was only 23 years old, he was growing, his resume and his style was very impressive, he did not have to fight dirty to win, he was a slick fighter. He was not a loudmouth but a pure professional, fighting in Madison Square Garden, even Pedroza cannot boast of that. But death robbed us fans of seeing possible greatness that would only increase. Too bad, we may never know, Rest In Peace Champ.

Central America from Mex down to Panama is all part of North America. South America begins with the giant continent below. It is all latin-America though.
