What a special talent..great resume too. beat a ton of different styles. I might have to move him in my top 15-20 fighters of all time...I could watch him all day, man was he amazing What do you guys think was his peak fight? I go with Gomez
One of my all time favs as I'm a massive fan. The Gomez fight is probably my all time favorite fight ever as I can't stand Gomez. His masterclasses against Little Red where brilliant and the war between him and the Professor is a modern day classic. Chava was amazing as he never seemed to get rattled in the ring even when he got tagged by some massive punchers. The look on his face never seemed to change. I've never seen a prizefighter with a more relaxed demeanor.
All of his bouts were shown on live TV back in the 70s. He was the real deal....quick, great boxer, great puncher and impossible to fluster in the ring. One of my all time favorites. One of the best all time and one would be hard pressed to find a greater all around talent.
He was not a great puncher but a good puncher. He hit Little Red flush dozens of times and could not drop him. Regardless, an exceptional fighter and still so young when he died. He could have reigned another ten years. Extremely gifted and mentally strong. Tragic loss.
Not dropping Red has no bearing on Salvidors punching power. Sanchez fought Lopez with great defensive care slowly beating him down over time not wanting Danny to land one of his bombs. He was very wary as to what Red had done to so many before him. Salvidor could punch with the best of them at 126.
No, he had better than average power but wasnt a puncher. More attrition and timing/counterpunching than pure power. More a Hagler than a Ketchel
If that. He really wasn't a big puncher, just a "sharp" puncher if that makes sense. He was accurate and they kept coming. That's what got him his KO's. You can see this in his earlier fights, pre-title as well. He was much more of a banger then and still had to wear guys down through attrition. He was always more accurate than his opponents, and created better punching angles, and he was always throwing. That was his edge back then, before the title shot.
I think Nelson did incredibly well for an inexperienced fighter against Sanchez. Really an impressive showing by the Ghanian. I would have liked to have seen a rematch down the road, as well as a Sanchez-Fenech showdown. Would have been interesting to see if the relentless Aussie could have made inroads against Sanchez' smooth, unflapable style.
In terms of weight, sure, by a few pounds. We've seen countless great fighters handle that kind of size discrepancy just fine. As for height, Sanchez was shorter than Carlos Zarate, and Gomez handled him just fine.
It almost seems unfair to call it a great performance, because Sanchez was just in a different league, but the first fight against Little Red is an absolute miracle of counter-punching. So smooth, so accurate, so well-timed.
