I also am a big fan of Sal and wonder how high up in weight he would have gone. Does anyone remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news of his death? In the pre-internet, pre-social media, pre-24 hour newscycle era, most people only got fleeting glances at the news. If I remember correctly, I think I heard the news while watching some other sports broadcast. It may also have been mentioned briefly on a national news broadcast as well. Of course, I had to wait a couple of months to get full coverage from the boxing magazines. I can't believe it was that long ago.
Superficial argument, and almost all of his stoppages were in the last rounds of his fights from accumulation. It dosent really matter either way, he was successful without having one shot power and his counterpunching and stamina made up for it in grinding down and tiring his opponents.
The most mentally calm fighter I've ever come across, and he puts his punches together so elegantly. His elegance as a fighter rivals that of Jofre.
I was a fan of his from the time he beat little Red Lopez (who I was a big fan of) but when he beat Gomez the way he did I knew I saw greatness and his battle vs Azhumah Nelson was another medal of his greatness
It definitely was...that right hand was just so accurate. I recently watched this for the first time in years, I had forgotten what a horrific beating Little Red took.
