That "green" Nelson may still be worth about 5 of Pedroza's garden variety title defenses. Azumah was young, strong, powerful and awkward. All the things that made him a legend. He showed those qualities and would have if not outright beaten Pedroza, given him at least as much trouble. As I said before Sanchez didn't have the benefit of hindsight. His challenger was unknown.
Pedroza is so underrated by some. It's seems some can't appreciate both fighters, and give both their due. But Sanchez did beat Ford 1st. You didn't list him in your Sanchez collum.
Pedroza has several unknown challengers on his record, Cecilio Lastra,Ha Ha. Dirty is Dirty, that does not make a fighter great, it means he lacks skill when the chips are down, I stick to my opinion. You cannot compare Pedroza to a Sandy Sadler, nice try.
Salvador Sanchez passed on August 12 1982 as mentioned before, how is he going to fight more opponents, maybe in the next world, Lol. Pedroza was knocked out by Alfonso Zamora. Salvador like many greats had his faults but he did have a granite chin, he was not a below class fighter who fought the majority of the easy pickings at featherweight, you stick to your dirty fighters if you wish, I stick to classy great champions. I always stick to my guns, no one can ever change my mind. Conversation over.
Salvador Sanchez is my number 1 favourite boxer so I am somewhat biased. Still, I think he is rated fairly (by those who matter) and the 'cult following' has always seemed to be a minority opinion in my view. As for a Sanchez vs Arguello match, at 126lbs Sanchez wins. He would definitely be able to pull off the type of strategies and ring generalship Marcel and Olivares had success with. 130lbs I think is possible but nothing to bet on. 135lbs is too far.
Too bad Salvador Sanchez lost his life at the age of 23, his fights were always on the more popular cable station, HBO. He was more recognizable, fought recognized opposition, had a good style, had plans when he retired, was attending medical school. A classy champion, had he lived an Alexis Arguello vs Salvador Sanchez would have been great to see, he had no competition at 126 lbs.
Cheers guys great posts!! I'd favor Sanchez at 126 as well. Agree 130 would be near a toss up tho Arguello was extremely strong there but 135 it's Arguello.
Plenty of fighters were dirty it didn't stop them from being great fighters. Saddler, Zivic,Greb, Marciano ,just for starters. I'm not comparing Pedroza to anyone. In 20 defences it's not surprising he has a few gimmees is it? So did Muhammad Ali. Your premise is because he was dirty he wasn't great ,and lacked skill and so you don't like him and that's a load of illogical horse ****.
Sanchez's defences v Ring ranked fighters Lopez Castillo Ford Laporte Castanon Gomez Pedroza Carrasquilla Caba Lockridge x2 Taylor Laporte Ford Lastra whom,Pedroza beat for his title ,and you say was "unknown," was Ring ranked no7 and no 10 the next year. Being stubborn and unable to countenance another's point of view ,even to the extent of wilfully misinterpreting it, is NOT a virtue, quite the opposite in fact. Panamanian Pedroza held the WBA featherweight title for more than seven years before a points loss to McGuigan. A UK television audience of 19 million people watched the Loftus Road bout. The WBA said Pedroza had battled pancreatic cancer, adding he "was a worthy world champion and above all a great human being". Irish fighter McGuigan, who was named BBC Sport Personality of the Year in 1985 after beating Pedroza, tweeted: "A sad day for me as my rival and outstanding world featherweight champion Eusebio Pedroza passes away. It was a pleasure to share the ring with him." Pedroza won the world title aged 22 and defended the belt 19 times, making him one of the longest-reigning champions in featherweight history. A WBA statement read: "Pedroza died at 62 years of age. Initially he was confined in the hospital struggling with pancreatic cancer, but later he was sent home where he continued to fight until the final bell rang early this morning." After his unanimous points defeat by McGuigan, Pedroza fought five more times, retiring in 1992 with a record of 41 wins, six losses and a draw. ps Nineteen years old Pedroza then a Bantam weight in his 16th fight mwas ko'd by champion Alfonso Zamora 24-0-0 all ko's , in 33 wins Zamora has 32 ko's. In his 16th fight Sanchez fought Raul Lopez 6-1-0. Sanchez's defence against Patrick Ford below. "Mexico's Salvador Sanchez, apparently confused in the early rounds, regained his composure and punched out a contested majority decision over Patrick Ford of Guyana to retain the WBC featherweight championship. Ford, at 5'10", used his 6 1/2 inch reach advantage to score heavily in the early rounds by keeping his left in Sanchez' face. Ford sent blood trickling from Sanchez' left nostril when he rocked the champion with a left uppercut in the 3rd round. However, Sanchez moved inside the longer armed challenger and punched Ford's lower body with jabs and jolted the taller man several times with uppercuts." -Associated Press. Ford's manager filed an official protest before the fight due to two of the judges being from Sanchez' native country In his next fight Ford challenged Pedroza for his title and was ko'd in13 rds. No hometown judging was needed! lol
Is he overrated? Yeah, by those who insist he's the greatest featherweight or greatest Mexican fighter. He was neither. That doesn't mean he wasn't great. There is some James Dean syndrome in there too, though I don't believe that factors in for me personally.
I don't understand why some feel the need to minimize Pedroza's accomplishments. The man was one of the greatest feathers in history. He had no problem going to any opponents hometown and fighting there. He defended his title 19 times . Against the best feathers of the era. Watching him in his prime was a joy, one of the most well rounded feathers in history. Sure he could get in the mud, but it's the opponents responsibility to correct the action , if the ref isn't catching it. Don't stand their and cry to the ref (As Laporte did) There's no reason in my opinion to minimize what Pedroza accomplished to maximize Sanchez's. If they had fought each other Sanchez would need to be at his very best to beat Pedroza at his. I wouldn't bet my retirement he wins even then.
Yes he beat Ford in Mexico by majority decision and two of the judges were Mexicans! "Mexico's Salvador Sanchez, apparently confused in the early rounds, regained his composure and punched out a contested majority decision over Patrick Ford of Guyana to retain the WBC featherweight championship. No hometown judges were required!
Both Pedroza and Sanchez were great fighters.Pedroza has the record for title defences at Feather I believe and was not afraid to defend his title in the other guys back yard. Tearing him down because you don't like him is childish and petty ,one poster has seriously mugged himself on this thread, and it ain't you or me!
