Yeah I mean you can’t help but marvel at Sanchez late. An all time great clutch performance, the way he composes himself and steps it up a gear like SRL... in any of Nelson’s other filmed fights, I’ve never seen him display this type of stamina before
Hey I'm with ya. One of my sons is a Marine reservist and a Police officer. My late Pop was an Army Drill Sergeant and a cop for 10 yrs. I'm not into personal attacks here unless I feel I need to defend myself. So yes let's move on from this ####. Dempsey is a hero of mine so I'll refrain from that with you. I've said befor Sanchez along with Pedroza are 2 huge favorites of mine. Sanchez Nelson was truly a classic. I would like to have seen a more seasoned and better prepared Nelson but I believe the outcome would have been the same except with a decision instead of a TKO. As far as Sanchez I cant really pick between him Chavez and Saldivar. Sanchez I believe was the most versatile though. It is a fight that's impossible to get tired watching for sure
Awesome respect to them! I do think Nelson became more disciplined and savvy later on...I just think the Sanchez Nelson fight was fought at such a high level, its hard for me to take away from either fighter. I feel the same about ali Frazier I. A great fight, great event..nothing takes away from either man
Sanchez vs Chavez and saldivar...man tough ones. Sanchez definitely has the stylistic edge vs saldivar since Sal loved people who came into him, but saldivar had a bit of Frazier in him never stopped coming...he was at a different level than most.
That was such an incredible display by Frazier it's a shame he could never duplicate it. The Sanchez Nelson fight was fought at an incredible high level. Its definitely one of the best fights I ever saw. Matter of fact that would make a good thread! Best fights we ever saw. I really love fights from the 70's to early 80's. I may start that tomorrow as well as rewatching the San Nelson fight. It's been about 5 yrs now.
I hear you but that can work both ways. Nelson only had one weeks notice but how much did Sanchez know about him? That short notice can be tricky. It may help him, he didn't have time to get nervous and let the pressure get to him. That could aid a young fighter. We know that Nelson can give anyone hell maybe he wins the rematch but he wouldn't be sneaking up this time. Sanchez may have figured him out.
It's weird how at the time Sanchez having difficulty with Nelson had a lot of people, especially in the boxing magazines, questioning whether Sanchez was really that good due to him struggling against a young, barely known fighter. Obviously that opinion was reevaluated by anyone with any sense after people realized how good Nelson actually was.
I know Foreman fans may hate me, but sometimes I do wonder if the 67-71 Frazier may have stood a much better chance...
Azumah had very heavy hands and his delivery on his punches was tough to gauge. He could change up at any time. He was dynamic. You can't really prepare for that until you've experienced it. He could land a glancing blow and move his opponent into the next one.
I don't recall Nelson fighting ever again in such a frantic, murderous, relentless fashion as he did here, he was almost immediately a more measured and balanced all-rounder from here on in. Curious really. Sometimes he'd march in aggressively with a static, high guard or educated upper body movement but never with the same effective if reckless abandon as against Sanchez. His career would've been interesting if he'd adopted the same approach for longer imo with more experience behind him.
